Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345RD Review

Back as thin and light notebooks were all the rage in 2009, a surprise contender for the most affordable thin 13-inch Toshiba laptop came from. Satellite T135, an optical drive-free laptop with an Intel Pentium or AMD dual-core CPU Neo, knew exactly provide the sort of computing power that is missing most netbooks. For everything from streaming video to general office work, it was more than enough. It was not as cheap as a netbook, but it was not as expensive as many thin laptops, either.

Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345RD Review

Toshiba’s update, the Satellite T235 is like its predecessor in many ways – perhaps too much. We can not really wrong, but because it remains one of the thinnest all-around affordable 13-inch laptops. However, the AMD Turion dual-core powered Neo II T235D-S1345, it’s the same price as many i3 Intel Core laptops.

The weight and battery life on this ultra-portable 13-incher is superior to many standard 13-inch machines, but it comes at the same cost as the performance of the other Satellite models T135 had. The T235D still lacks an optical drive, and it is no longer the thinnest machine around, in fact, for just a few hundred more, the Toshiba Portege R705-P25 offers a lighter chassis, a i3 Core processor, and a DVD-burning optical drive. However, if an all-around fine machine you are looking at a price that is reasonable, the T235D-S1345 can handle much more than a Netbook, and a more ergonomic design.

Satellite S1345-T235D is a relative lightweight in the 13-inch laptops, less than 4 pounds, has a tapered design that also gives a smaller overall profile. At first glance it looks more like a 12-inch ultraportable. From the outside, the T235D is not really different from the previous T135 Series – the same shiny plastic cover dominated – this time in a gray shaded etched pattern on the fingerprint Securities, or reduce an optional red – and a slightly bulging battery protrudes at the bottom, but hardly enough to feel intrusive.

Inside, a foreign domination of textured silver plastic surrounding the keyboard deck, the effect seems to be sticky. After some use, we have softened the draft – to a point. While Toshiba may be credited for not playing it safe, we would prefer something more subdued. Combined with the overall feel is very plastic laptop ownership, T235D tends looking for something cheap. Fortunately, the chassis construction feels quite sturdy, starting with a new keyboard.

Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345RD Review

We have criticized previous generation of satellites with Toshiba’s flat keyboards that are not feeling well, but his honor, the new order on the keyboard T235 series is a real improvement. The solid square buttons look too small at first sight, but their distance shows a surprisingly good ergonomic experience. It feels like we found the keyboard on the Toshiba NB305 Netbook Mini, blown up and put on a larger laptop. The arrow keys are even thoughtfully to compensate, and the function keys are placed in small clusters of four buttons. If there is a big improvement for the T235D, it is in those keys.

The wider than high multitouch touchpad tends to be a bit too slick, but the sensitivity is excellent, and we found under the contour curved buttons easily accessible. And textured deck have complained about is to provide comfortable friction on your palms while typing. Clever stuff, after all.

The Satellite T235D-S1345 has a 13.3-inch glossy widescreen LED-backlit display with a 1366 x 768 pixel native resolution, which is normal for screens of this size. Photos looked pretty clear and readable text, though the screen looked washed at wide viewing angles. The built-in stereo speakers emit sound through vents under the front of the soil, they are loud enough to enjoy videos, but are not suitable for music. A built-in webcam is a lot like the one on the previous T135 – OK for Web chat, but we’ve seen better.

Except for the missing optical drive and the lack of Bluetooth, the T235D-S1345 is the selection of ports, we would expect from a 13-inch laptop. Toshiba added a combo eSATA / USB 2.0 port, which is nice, like the ubiquitous bed-and-charge USB port which can power USB devices when the Satellite is sleeping or even eliminated. It turns a laptop into a big battery for your phone when traveling.

Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345RD Review

Like its predecessor, the Satellite T135D-S1324, the S1345 has a T235D-Neo AMD dual-core processor, although this time it’s slightly upgraded to a Turion dual core II Neo K625. The performance has improved a bit but not massively so. For most mainstream computing needs, these dual-core CPU does the job surprisingly well. We are also pleased to say that generally, the full-screen video streaming nicely handled, but we had better results if we avoided trying to watch HD streams. The T235D-S1345 is a much better solution for mobile computing than the single-core Atom processor or netbooks, but it also falls short of what even a basic i3 Intel Core processor can do. In terms of overall performance benchmark, but edged out the slim 11.6-inch Dell Inspiron M101z that an Athlon II Neo K325 dual-core CPU packs. Its performance is impressive for a 11.6-inch system, but it’s not far off what we would expect the budget 13-inch, either.

The included ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics are close to Intel’s integrated graphics in terms of effective performance. The video chip does definitely a boost, but all based on 3D games are barely playable. The system ran Unreal Tournament III at 13.1 frames per second at 1,200 x 768-pixel resolution. For casual games and more forgiving graphics settings, you need more viable results.

An included six-cell battery, Toshiba Satellite S1345-T235D ran for 4 hours and 28 minutes using our video playback battery drain test. That is very good and certainly above average for the 13-inch laptops, better battery life than the average 13-inch Core i3 laptop significantly. However, it is a dive of the last generation of satellites T135 battery lives, approximately one hour longer. It is also less impressive under Netbook competitors, so it depends on what category you consider the trim T235D-S1345 covered. With a low-power CPU and no optical drive, one would expect better.

Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 Review

A great sounding sound system and a great-looking 16-inch display, the Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086, available at Amazon, a large entertainment notebook. It lacks the Blu-ray drive, the same configured and priced Toshiba Satellite A665-S6085, but it makes up for this loss with an extended-life battery a much longer life battery and produces a WiMax radio for high-speed wireless broadband.

Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 Review

The A665-S6086′s design is almost identical to that of the Toshiba A665-S6085, both use the same plastic lid and keyboard deck, which has a texture pattern, the only difference is that the A665-S6086 is dark gray of color, the Toshiba A665-S6085 is black. And like the Toshiba A665-S6085, A665-S6086 the lid flexes a fair bit if you press down, making me wonder how easy it would be to damage the screen when the lid ever gets knocked a little too hard.

Both laptops also share the same footprint (15 by 10 inches), but because the A665-S6086 adds a 12-cell extended-life battery 98WH to the mix (the A665-S6085 comes with a 6-cell 48Wh battery) 2.2-inch thick, the A665-S6086′s rear feet stick up about 0.75 inches higher than the more slender Toshiba A665-S6085. Also because of the extended-life battery, the A665-S6086 (6.12 pounds) is heavier than the Toshiba A665-S6085 (5.55 pounds), respectively.

The “tile”-like keyboard on the two laptops are identical, where the square, isolated key titles like Scrabble. The keys have nice trip, and there is only a little bit of flex to the right of the keyboard and on the dedicated number pad. A strip of touch-sensitive buttons is above the keyboard. The buttons are the Toshiba Power Utility Eco-management application, 802.11b/g/n the radio on and off, adjust volume, play and pause and play media. There is also a button that the backlight of Toshiba logo on the left corner of the palm rest and a thin LED strip above the touchpad turns. The touchpad surface is smooth, responsive, multitouch gestures, and easy-to-press buttons make it a joy to use. It is level with the palm resting A665-S6086.

Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 Review

Like the Toshiba A665-S6085, the A665-S6086′s outstanding feature is the great audio system. Even without a subwoofer, the fresh-sounding and very loud Harmon Kardon speakers actually a hint of bass. You can also use sparkling speaker of the A665-S6086′s, even when the laptop is in sleep mode or turned off by connecting an MP3 player on the laptop, the A665-S6086′s “Sleep-and-Music” feature.

The impressive audio quality of the sound system carries over to movie soundtracks as well. Not only movies sound great, they look great on clear and color-rich, the A665-S6086′s 16-inch display. But as with most glossy displays, reflections can be problematic, unless you’re in a dark room. Even with a native resolution of 1366 x 768, you can not watch 1080p videos in their native resolution, but this is less a problem with the A665-S6086 than it is with the Toshiba A665-S6085, a Blu-inclusive ray drive the A665-S6086 comes with a more pedestrian dual-layer DVD +/ RW drive.

Another notable difference between the A665-S6086 and Toshiba A665-S6085 Toshiba is how the bundled Web Camera Application acts. On the Toshiba A665-S6085, the app’s partially hidden bar there was always annoying, no matter what else was on the screen, including movies. Fortunately this was not the case with the A665-S6086, Toshiba Web Camera App’s bar tucked away at the right times.

The A665-S6086 comes with a decent set of connectivity options, 100Mbps Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, WiMax and 4G WiMax mobile broadband radio provides connection speeds up to four times faster than 3G data connections among . If you want WiMax capabilities of the A665-S6086′s use, but you must pay extra for service via a WiMax service provider, such as Clearwire, Sprint and Time Warner Cable.

Toshiba Satellite A665-S6086 Review

You’ll also want to ensure that WiMAX coverage in areas where you plan on using the A665-S6086, like WiMax availability is still very limited in many places in the U.S. additional connections to the A665-S6086 are HDMI and VGA-out ports, an ExpressCard/34 slot, a 7-in-1 media card reader and four USB 2.0 ports. One of the USB ports is a combo eSATA / USB port which also “USB Sleep and Charge” feature, which you charge USB powered devices such as MP3 players and phones, even when the laptop is in sleep mode or powered off.

Pre-installed software is also similar to the A665-S6086 and Toshiba A665-S6085, a plethora of Toshiba-branded apps include. You might find at least some of these applications are useful, such as Toshiba Toshiba Face Recognition security app or reel-time, a visual timeline of recently opened files are displayed. Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV

Toshiba has recently started to sell Satellite A665-3DV that can be considered as a 3D laptop thanks to the use of the nVidia 3D Vision, that has 3D software, 3D glasses, and a screen that is ready for 3D covers. The simple features include a Blu-ray drive, HDMI and VGA outputs, Dolby Advanced Audio technology, and an ExpressCard slot. Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV Review

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV Review

We’ve seen laptops Toshiba Satellite A665-line (more than once, actually), and we have seen laptops that incorporate Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology. You can probably guess where this is going and the new Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV takes that trusted multimedia system and adds support for 3D Vision.

The A665-3DV is a powerful performer and solves a major problem with 3D gaming by incorporating all the necessary 3D compatible hardware (the main one is 120Hz display), which only your (included) 3D glasses and a rechargeable small USB IR emitter – the whole thing is much less cumbersome than using Nvidia’s 3D Vision on a desktop PC. The Blu-ray drive also works with 3D Blu-ray discs, although the relatively small screen does not make for a large group viewing experience.

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV

Still, unless you’re a true fan of 3D, $ 1,600 is a bit of a stretch for a 15.6-inch laptop (interestingly, some recent Satellite A665 models had slightly larger 16-inch displays), even one with an Intel Core i7 740QM CPU and NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M GPU. If we truly 3D PC gaming, would we want something with a bigger screen and better than the A665′s 1366 x 768 resolution.

Design

The look and feel of the A665-3DV is almost identical to other Satellite A665 models we’ve reviewed. The gray plastic structure that includes most of the body looks and feels like it belongs on a less expensive machine. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is definitely not make this a showpiece living room or den. Simultaneously with the construction for the most part feels very solid and sturdy, and there is no annoying flex in the keyboard – a common problem in laptops of all price ranges. Even better, the lid and wrist rest having a finely textured pattern that repels fingerprints.

The keyboard is the typical island-style can be seen on almost every new laptop, with flattened, widely spaced keys. The 15.6-inch laptop body gives just enough room for a full number pad on the right side of the keyboard, and there is a row of touch-sensitive media control buttons above the function keys. We often dinged Toshiba’s media control buttons to emit a loud beep even when mute hit (which was always counterintuitive, to say the least). Although the volume up / down buttons still beep standard, at least Toshiba beep from the speaker mute button while. Turning off all the beeps, then go to the Toshiba Utilities folder, click HWSetup, then press the Settings tab and then “Function Button Sound Notification”.

The touchpad is quite large, but offset to the left, because the number pad, and the surface has a very good friction-free coating with the large mouse buttons. Toshiba also has a small button above the touchpad off you need a mouse to connect.

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV

Features

The system includes a pair of proprietary software utilities. ReelTime shows a row of miniatures on the bottom of the screen (it is intended to look like a film reel) that shows your recently viewed documents and web pages. Bulletin Board The slick-looking app lets you arrange photos and notes in one workspace. Both are well made, but you must take time to teach them.

The 15.6-inch display has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, which is the same as most 11 – to 15-inch laptops. The screen has a glossy finish that look of photos and video improves, but creates a glare and reflection. Harman Kardon speakers are the same found on other Toshiba models, although no overt branding on the speaker grills. For a pair of integrated laptop speakers, they deliver excellent sound quality with surprising depth.

The laptop has a useful collection of data and video connections. You get four USB 2.0 ports (one of which serves as an eSATA port), HDMI and VGA ports, a memory card reader and an ExpressCard/34 slot. The combo USB / eSATA port, Toshiba’s Sleep-and-feature that lets you take mobile phones, MP3 players and other gadgets USB charging.

Performance and battery life

The Satellite A665-3DV has an impressive set of components, including a 1.73GHz Intel Core i7 740QM CPU and a high-end nVidia GeForce GTS 350M GPU. The powerful hardware helps to cover the overhead required for the 3D processing, so we are able to play games at high settings not killing the frame rate if switching to 3D mode. If you don’t know 3D Vision and how it works, it should be extended to cover the basic look.

Toshiba Satellite A665-3DV

In our Unreal Tournament III test, the A665-3DV ran at 102.9 frames per second at 1366 x 768. That means it should run all current games at high detail levels, mainly because the screen resolution tops out at only 1366 x 768, which are hardcore PC gamers would consider on the low side.

The Satellite A665-3DV ran for 1 hour and 43 minutes in our video playback battery drain test using the included 12-cell battery. Coming less than two hours is regrettable, but sometimes understandable to a high-power gaming PC. However, that usually means a 17 – or 18-inch laptop, not a medium 15-inch model. Combined with the fact that the massive 12-cell battery protrudes from the bottom of the system as a huge standard, and this makes the weak battery life just sad.

Toshiba Portege R705-P35

Toshiba’s Portege R series has always impressed, and the new 13-inch Portege R705-P35 is close to a perfect balance of design, price, and performance. Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Review

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Review

We know that the search for the perfect laptop is ultimately fruitless. Different users have to make different needs, budgets and expectations, and the technology of tomorrow does not threaten just-purchased laptop semi-obsolete before it even comes out of his box. That is, the new Toshiba Portege R705-P35 comes as as anything we’ve seen this year in the area and offers a great mix of price, design, functions and performance.

The Portege R705-P35 is a 13-inch laptop (similar to Apple’s MacBook), the largest screen size, we would consider carrying around a regular basis, but also the smallest, we would be in a position comfortable for full-time-use computing. It is thinner than the current white plastic MacBook (but not as slim as the MacBook Air or Dell XPS Adamo) and has a sturdy magnesium alloy chassis.

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Review

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 version of these lists for $ 879. A handful of business-oriented configs are also available (called the R700, R705 instead of), creating a docking port and a few other corporate-friendly features for $ 999 and higher.

This fixed-configuration retail model for $ 250 less than an entry-level MacBook, you get a newer Intel Core i3-processor (the basic MacBook has an older Core 2 Duo CPU), a large 500GB hard drive and Intel wireless display technology, which allows the laptop display to a remote TV or monitor to be radiated (this requires a separately sold $ 100 Push2TV Netgear adapter is connected to the TV). Not to draw too many comparisons MacBook, but the R705-P35 also has an SD card slot (as well as virtually any Windows-based laptops, no matter the price) and HDMI and eSATA ports – all of which is missing $ 999 MacBook.

Another advantage to the P35 variant of the R705-P35 is a built-in support for wireless 4G. If you live in an area served by a WiMax provider (eg Clear, Sprint, Time Warner), you can up service at the time of sale (you need a contract, but for a discount on the hardware-eligible) or add it later by contacting the provider. It is yet another monthly bill, of course – and it will certainly speed up your battery power – but you do not have to have any additional USB dongles or external Mi-Fi equipment in tow.

There are a few questions. The integrated Intel graphics are a draw, the keyboard is not illuminated (which have been a nice touch to this sleek-looking system), and the only average battery life is not enough for a full day of on-the-go computing. Also out of the box, the hard drive accelerometer was much too sensitive, parking our HDD head every time when we breathed as much as on the R705-P35. Onboard Bluetooth is a no-show.

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Review

These problems aside, sees the Portege R705-P35 and feels like a much more expensive laptop, and is our new go-to place for those who want to experience a smooth 13-inch, but can not (or not) join the MacBook masses.

The brushed-metal magnesium alloy chassis feels sturdy, despite its thinness (tapered and the front lip, making them even thinner). The Portege is a cousin of one of our favorite notebooks of all time, the 12-inch Portege R500. The $ 1,500 (or more) system suffered from too much flex in his body and lid, which is not the case here.

The back of the lid on this consumer model has a subtle dark blue tint to it, as in the solid black specifically to meet the business version. The only optical element on the R705-P35, we were really disliked the excessive chrome screen hinges that look more at home than would rims on a pimped up car than on a sophisticated laptop.

The keyboard uses flat, widely separated island-style buttons. While perfect, the keys are much more rectangular than most, as if they were shortened to save space. The input is a bit on the side clacky, but not as much as a deal breaker. We appreciate the great separate page-up, Page Down, Home and End keys on the right side – they are usually relegated to alternate function keys on most laptops. Our biggest complaint is that the keyboard is not illuminated. We have seen this feature on other Toshiba notebooks in this price class, and it is always a welcome extra. Toshiba would also do well to media and volume controls easily changed by swapping them with their access Fn key to make – something we’ve seen in other multimedia-friendly laptops trending.

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Review

It is not as great as on a MacBook, but the R705-P35′s touchpad is one of the bigger we’ve seen on a 13-inch laptop. Multi-Touch gestures include scrolling with two fingers, but as always seems the case on Windows laptops, it is nowhere as smooth and react like a MacBook. The left and right mouse buttons are well sized and easy to use – a concept that many PC manufacturers seem to have problems.

Toshiba also includes a few custom software utilities to the system. ReelTime is a type of browser history and shows all previous documents and web-page in thumbnail form at the bottom of the screen. It is amazingly smooth and usable, although it is not really a necessity. There is also a Toshiba Bulletin Board App You compile photos and notes in a single working environment. It is also plain looking, but we’re always dubious of learning a new software tool that only works on one brand of laptop.

The 13.3-inch LED display has a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels – comparable to the MacBook 1,280 x800 and the current standard for most laptops 13 to 15 inches. While not exactly dull, the screen was much less brilliant than we are used to see from a consumer laptop. The stereo speakers were thin and not great for blasting music, but not outside the limits for a laptop this size.

The inclusion of a combo USB/eSATA port and HDMI and an SD card slot type, the Portege R705-P35 is a great advantage over the MacBook in terms of ports and connections. Although the system has an Intel wireless transmitter mounted display (see our hands-on demo here for more details on this very interesting technology), it is a shame, the R705-P35 is not required with the NetGear adapter to wirelessly stream video will come bundled television. The first round of the Wireless Display laptops from earlier in the year 2010 all-in adapter (sold separately).

Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Review

With a 2.26GHz Intel Core i3 CPU, the Toshiba R705-P35 is more than fast enough for mainstream use of Web-surfing and productivity in order processing and high-definition video playback Photoshop. The next step, the i5 Core series of processors offers greater performance, but we do not have the chips in a system seen this thin and light. Performance-wise, it is certainly similarities with other recent 13-inch laptops, but remember that you are getting a lot more horsepower in the same price range of trade up to a medium-large 14 – or 15-inch laptop with an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor. Apple’s latest MacBook actually managed our benchmark tests run faster with the older Core 2 Duo processor, but many of these tests Apple-optimized software, including iTunes and QuickTime.

The largest deficit of the R705-P35 is that it is saddled with the basic integrated Intel graphics. The 13-inch MacBook, for example, has a low-end, but still very impressive GPU from Nvidia, which is good for mainstream gaming. The integrated graphics and CPU Core i3 for playback of HD video streaming in order, but not for some of the basic games. If you are mainly interested in PC gaming, we want to try OnLive streaming platform game you play even a top-shelf PC games on almost any PC or laptop.

The Portege R705-P35 ran for 3 hours and 56 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the six-cell battery. This is fine for a 13-inch or larger laptop, but about 2.5 hours less than the standard MacBook. We have heard some complaints from readers that the R705-P35 not live up to its advertised “up to 8 hours” battery life – and under normal conditions, it is surely only get half. But Toshiba is not alone in this, almost all PC makers exaggerate battery life under test by unrealistic conditions. Also, remember that our battery discharge test is particularly hard, so you can expect longer life from casual Web surfing and office use.

Toshiba includes an industry-standard one-year parts and labor warranty with the system. Support through a 24/7 toll-free telephone line in the Internet search and a customized support page, you can direct it to online documents and driver downloads for that particular model.

Watch the Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q893 part of gaming notebook line is it’s no surprise that the computer is a bit conspicuous at first glance. The goal is primarily black with red Omega chrome strip that is smooth without being too bright. An Intel Core i5-460M Dual-Core processor is standard and runs at 2.53 GHz with 3 MB L3 cache. This notebook offers a large 18.4-inch TruBrite display, 1680 x 945 resolution and 720p support. If you are not into 3D games, then this resolution is a bit low. Do not expect this notebook all day tote, also because it weighs a little over 10 pounds. The battery life is up to 3.75 hours with the included 12-cell battery, but Toshiba is offering an eco-Utility button to save power when needed.

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q893

The Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q893 comes with a 500GB hard drive 7200 rpm min equipped. While additional space is welcome, the 500 GB hard drive is more than adequate for the $ 1,299 price. The same applies to memory in this notebook. Although 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 is included, the system is expandable up to 8 GB. If you like games with maxed settings, you will be better with a stronger engine, such as the ASUS G73JW. But for mainstream gamers, the Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q893 is a good option.

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q896 Review

The Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q896 notebook (and I use that word loosely) is not a Media Center Accounting, but a powerhouse of a notebook, which produces a native 1080p resolution, Blu-ray playback with up scaling has to DVDs and a sophisticated HDMI output, send an uncompressed A/V signal to your HDTV. It is also an animal, clocking in around 10 pounds, perfect for a desktop, but not for the trip. The laptop sports a 18.4″ screen (1920 x 1080 resolution), Harman / Kardon stereo speakers, backlit keyboard, control pad media and a fast 7200rpm hard drive to access all your media. It is in the final glossy black and accented with a metallic red, probably one of the magnificent laptops I have seen next to Alienware products.

Diving into the more technical details, the laptop has Intel’s latest Quad-Core i7 processor rated 1.73Ghz, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics card with 1.5 GB of video memory, 4 GB DDR memory, integrated webcam (1.3 megapixels) , Bluetooth 2.1, Wireless-N capability, and a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection. On the front of the machine, the SD / MCC / XD memory card slot for those who want to turn a quick access to their photos from a digital camera and a switch to find the wireless connection. There are also lights to tell if the computer when the hard drive will bring access, etc … On the left side of the notebook, there is the Blu-ray / DVD drive, Firewire port, HDMI output, a USB port, a SATA port and the Ethernet jack. On the right you will find the 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jacks, two USB ports, a VGA output for projectors and the power connector. Unlike the majority of laptops on the market, there are no connections on the back of the notebook, it is reserved for the fans.

Around the illuminated keyboard (the exception is for work in low-light areas), see a full keyboard, the trackpad with two metallic red buttons for you, the media to control volume and the two speakers HK touchpad. The trackpad is also a button to turn off access, especially useful if you have an external mouse. One limitation of the media touch pad is where there is no tactile feedback to the keys, so I often accidentally press buttons while you type. That would be mute the volume, start the ECO mode, or utility access Windows Media Player depending on the button that my little finger brushed over. Another problem with doing serious typing on this machine is the huge amount of fingerprints and palm prints, coating the surface and the keys. It is just as bad on the iPad printed in ever covered, thus requires much wipe downs. Heck, should have included a cloth to Toshiba to help us.

Toshiba also has a few utilities, however, some of which bloatware shocking. ECO-mode allows you to track the power consumption of the notebook and optimize your settings, what kind of presence that you make with these giants. I would be curious to know, from the same market of people who bought this laptop really use it with power. It’s like a Hummer owner to give a lesson to throttle how much gas the car uses. Toshiba also included the Sleep & Charge function for the USB ports so that the computer shut down for power to be supplied, but charge your iPhone or other mobile device via USB. Finally, there is a hard drive sensor on the laptop that the hard drive when the laptop is moved guarded. It’s a bit too sensitive to the side table bump, but all that protects my data is a good thing.

If you have not figured out yet, I’ve been using the Toshiba Qosmio X505 as ancillary media center and a standard laptop while connected to multiple screens, an HP 2310E Slim LED-backlit monitor, a Sony Bravia KDL40NX700 40 – inch 1080p Edge LED-backlit 1080p HDTV and a Mitsubishi HC5500 LCD projector. I also tested the 18.4-inch monitor, but found media consumption (Blu-ray / DVD  / ripped media) far superior to the alternative view, especially the color reproduction and contrast. That being said, the monitor substantially outperforms other laptop screens in its class. It is difficult from the other external display to beat, especially in glorious 1080p resolution. The HDMI connection will automatically select the resolution and that’s it.

Toshiba includes a program called Media Controller for the transfer of media around your network. Have you copied the files on the laptop, you want to move on the Playstation 3 in the living room? Send them to use with media controller without an FTP program, it’s all drag & drop. For complicated video, I have Windows Media Center-output Blu-ray, music, pictures and movies ripped my various ads. It worked very well for navigating through my files to a Media Center compatible remote control (I use the Gyration Air Music Remote GYR4101CKUS) and Toshiba automatically includes the Start button for the DVD & Blu-ray player applications, with the PC come.

A small problem I’m playing with Blu-ray media was that the insertion of a Blu-ray Disc is the wrong program, Toshiba’s own up-scaling DVD software instead of Corel WinDVD software, which plays Blu-ray discs. If Toshiba is software to play Blu-ray content, it is certainly not working for me. However, it was very good upscale DVDs. The Corel software worked perfectly for Blu-rayr and it was only a matter of inserting a Blu-ray association to another program to start, easy for an advanced computer user, but probably not for the average consumer.

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q896

However, knowing my actual Blu-ray content is significantly faster on the Qosmio X505 than any of the players in my home. I do not think the drive is not loaded content faster, but the speed of processing data was superior in all areas. I try to watch only certain scenes from movies, but fell again in The Dark Knight, which looked fantastic sucked out of the internal Blu-ray drive. Even with the bloated BD-Live title, I was the actual film started in half the time on an above-average Blu-ray player has. You can use the main screen as well, just content to your preferred screen. I saw the slightest delay between the laptop screen and the HDMI output, but to expect when sending large amounts of data is on the screen. While I have a sound system used for most of the Harman Kardon speakers are by far the best built-in laptop speakers I’ve ever heard. They are incredibly sharp and have a solid middle class and lead a small room like a bedroom. There are also Dolby sound processing built in, so you can use a virtual 5.1 headphone setup, if you want to see a late movie without your significant other.

The Toshiba Qosmio X505 is a powerhouse when it comes to gaming. I threw the last few games like Fallout: New Vegas and Call of Duty: Black Ops on the graphics processor and it does not even blink an eye. It was cranking the full 1080p resolution with full graphics options and it was a silky smooth experience. It can also multitask with ease. Last week I was listening to (and sometimes observed) Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen to Blu-ray while surfing the web, working in Photoshop, typing a new Word document with a variety of other small applications. In addition, recovered more quickly from sleep mode than any laptop I’ve ever owned, usually takes about one second to move to a functional state.

Negatives

Obviously this is not portable solution for traveling. If you want to carry around that heavy laptop with you, you need a huge laptop bag and a room for the huge power supply. It is hardly a solution for around the house. I would recommend looking for a place and sticking with it, preferably in close proximity to another compatible 1080p display. Another problem is the least that bloatware easily wiped from the machine after the first week, as you tired of trying Norton, sell their overpriced virus package comes with endless pop get reminders.

Conclusion

The Toshiba Qosmio Q896-505 is by far the fastest notebook I’ve ever used and provides an incredibly user-friendly experience with HTPC Media Controller and Windows Media Center. There are not many competitors in the 18.4″ class of laptop and Toshiba is a very competitive price (sells for $ 1699, for about $ 1500 can be found online), compared to an over-marketed brand like Alienware. If the do reach the media in the main home theater is expanded to other parts of the house and looking for a new desktop computer, consider the combination of these goals and a look at the Qosmio X505. Alternative to the home theater room, this notebook ideal for graphic designers looking for serious Photoshop &  Illustrator, directors and musicians need Edit/Produce media although tools such as Premiere Pro and gaming fanatics who crave the latest tech for 2010 releases to play 1080p resolution.
