ARCHOS 101 Tablet Review

The Archos 101 is the 10-inch tablet Android needed in 2010. Thin, light and affordable priced at $ 319 (8GB) and $ 365 (16GB), the Archos 101 is the first decent Android 2.2 presentation we’ve seen on a screen iPad format.

Unfortunately, Archos’ timing is terrible. The 10-inch tablets making headlines these days are all running Android 3.0 (honeycomb) and the Archos 101 is making no promises to support the latest, greatest OS from Google. Still, if you’re looking for a 10-inch tablet – you need it now, and you need it cheap – the Archos 101 is not a bad way to go.

ARCHOS 101 Tablet Review

Unlike most of the Android tablets we’ve seen in the aftermath of the iPad, the Archos 101 looks really good next tablet from Apple. Similar size at about 10.5 inches wide, 6 inches high and 0.33 inches thick, the Archos 101 feels like a real tablet – not an oversized smartphone.

The first thing you notice about the Archos 101 is how light it is. At about 16 grams, it weighs about the same as a pint of beer and is noticeably lighter than the iPad. How Archos was able to achieve this light weight is no secret, though. Instead of aluminum and glass construction used on the iPad, the Archos design and construction is mostly plastic bends easily under pressure. True, tablets are relatively fragile devices inherently, but the 101 wins no points for robustness.

Another design detail that experienced Android users will notice is the Archos 101′s lack of tactile navigation buttons. Perhaps Google’s prediction of a move of all navigation buttons to the touch screen in Android 3.0, Archos has adapted Android 2.2 with on-screen buttons for home, back, menu, run the right of the screen. The end result is really ideal for tablets, as the navigation buttons to refocus, whatever the device is held.

Archos is also a little out of Android script when it comes to connectivity. For better or worse, all of the 101 ports are crowded on the left edge of the device – and, boy, there are a lot of ports. You get standard connections for headphones, an AC adapter and a Micro USB port for syncing with a computer. Archos also throws in a mini-HDMI port for output to a TV and a standard USB host port for connecting an external keyboard or thumb drive.

Also on the Archos 101 is a front-facing camera that both video and photos can shoot at VGA resolution (640×480 pixels). Fring a video chat application is installed that will work with the camera, along with the pinhole microphone found on the same side.

A kick stand is also included, located on the back. The stand folds from the middle and folds out far enough to prop up the tablet in a lightweight (30-degree) angle, which helps with touch-screen typing, but can also be used to the tablet upright to keep videos or a photo slideshow.

So much software goes, you’re looking at a device Android 2.2, minus the comforts of their own apps from Google, including Android Marketplace, Google Mail and Maps. You get the stock Android 2.2 e-mail app and browser, along with remixed versions Archos’ of the Android music player, photo viewer and video player.

As a gesture of peace project, Archos offers its own App Store called AppsLib, for those looking to go through the motions. As we have noted in previous Archos tablet reviews, the content is just not there. It’s like a journey through a flea market. There are plenty of knockoffs and hastily produced games and demos, but the brand names are not around.

ARCHOS 101 Tablet Review

What are the interesting hardware features. The Archos 101 has no cellular connectivity or GPS, but you get 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a few rare features that can win over some. For example, you get a full-size USB port that supports attached keyboards and thumbdrives. You will not find on a high-end Android Galaxy Tab tablet and Samsung, and certainly not on the iPad. There is also a mini-HDMI port on the screen to view mirrors on a TV – perfect for playing videos or show off websites.

Of course, not all of the specs are the winners. Despite the IPAD-like size, 101-screen has a poor viewing angle, limited brightness and a 1,024 x600-pixel resolution that does not meet its high-definition video playback capabilities. Video output via an HDMI cable (not supplied) maxes out at a decent 720p HD. Another disappointment is the lack of full support for Adobe Flash 10. It’s a complaint we make about tablets twice the price of the Archos 101 – but whatever you think you will buy, it is frustrating to come across broken Flash player while browsing the web.

Conclusion

The Archos 101 Android 2.2 tablet is not the fastest, smartest and most impressive tablet we’ve seen. It’s big and cheap, and Android provides core functionality with a few bells and whistles (HDMI, USB host), but for the most part is an obsolete instrument with a limited use for Web browsing and e-mail.

Viewsonic G-Tablet Review

For an Android Tablet is really head-to-head with the Apple iPad go, it must offer a comparatively large 10-inch screen. This seems a fairly logical assumption, but, surprisingly, most Android tablets we tested in 2010 have a screen size of 7 inches or less.

The ViewSonic Tablet G is the first branded tablet we’ve seen more on the challenge of adjusting for a 10-inch screen Android. The result is not an iPad-killer, and not live up to the best that can offer Android – but it stands out as a unique alternative.

Viewsonic G-Tablet Review

Design

The G Tablet’s shape and weight are similar as the iPad’s. Measuring 7.75 inches high, 10.5 cm wide and 0.5 inches thick, the G Tablet big enough to deliver Web pages and documents to their intended size, but not so large as to lead to cramp your hands.

As with most Android phones, you will find four capacitive touch buttons on the right side of the screen, controlling navigation features like search, back home, menu, and again. The bottom edge includes a pinhole microphone and a docking port for accessories. A volume rocker sits on top, positioned within easy reach finger. The stuff is gone geeky on the left seized, including a USB host port (for peripheral devices and USB sticks), microSD card slot, power button, mini USB sync port, headphone jack and AC adapter jack, and there are integrated Speakers on the left and right. The only unfortunate result of this arrangement is that Access tilts the tablet in their preferred landscape to cover up the speakers. If you want to connect in a pair of headphones, to your left hand sticking out awkwardly put the headphone cable.

The most important design decision made on the ViewSonic Tablet G is about the screen UI. The anticipated Android customizable desktop has been replaced with a large dash utilities, including weather, news, notes, clock, contacts and calendars. You can customize this view to some extent, they exchange the different modules pre-installed – but it’s nowhere tailored to him kind of Android desktop come to know we have to close. Admittedly, some of this is application-oriented organization functionality exists in the toolbar and tray app running on the ground, but basically in his metaphor of the interface G is closer to the Tablet Sony Dash, say, the HTC Evo 4G.

Function and Performance

Here is the part that kills us. The G’s Tablet sheet reads like a dream. It is Android 2.2 (you’d never know it from the interface) on top of a 2-Nvidia Tegra processor with 1 GHz of the muscle. You are given to grow 16 GB built-in memory with space for more than microSD. There is wireless support for 802.11 b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth 2.1 (A2DP though no audio streaming). A 1.3-megapixel Webcam sits above the screen, and joint sensor for automatic brightness adjustment and control accelerometers are all here.

Viewsonic G-Tablet Review

Try to surf the Web or begin to fall apart to install an application, however, and things. To ViewSonic credit, went the manufacturer no effort to ensure that would be the web browser worthy 10-inch screen of the Tablet G’s, or presented in a consistent format instead of the mobile format that most Android pill burden by default. In many situations, these sites look great sites like NYTimes.com and supplies in their full splendor, and supports the ability to use pinch gestures to zoom in and out of content, similar to the iPad. In other cases, such as its Web-based Google’s Gmail and Reader applications, the pages sometimes frozen and useless. Without Flash support (though we said it is coming soon), this does not work at all sites like Pandora, YouTube, and TV.

Now you may think: “Why not just download the applications for these services?” Now we have tried. This is the second heart pain with the G-Tablet – the official Android Marketplace for Apps is not here (not to mention nuclear Android apps like Gmail, Maps, navigation, places, YouTube and Voice Search). Instead, ViewSonic sent around the problem by adding a link to online Handango Android App Store download. With the Store Front, you can browse, download and install many third-party applications, including Pandora, Qik, Fring and Yelp. Unfortunately, none of these high-profile apps was properly on the Tablet G. Pandora does not start, Qik crashed, Fring came a burst of crackling and Yelp could not get a lock on our location (in part due to the lack of G Tablet GPS or Wi-Fi triangulation). In short, do not expect your favorite apps are supported.

If there is a silver lining, it is this – video playback rocks. Chalk it up to Nvidia’s Smokin ‘Tegra 2 processor or ViewSonic find out that people want to use a 10-inch screen for watching videos, but the G Tablet loads most video formats with ease and supports resolutions up to 1080p. We threw everything at the G Tablet, including MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, H.264 and MOV, and they all worked quickly and without incident. That is, the tablet is missing Adobe Flash support (yes, it happens), a large part of the web-video content by not going to work. We have put the same complaint against the Apple iPad, however, to offer the choice of media and iTunes streaming video applications by Apple, we think it’s fair to say, are not most iPad users feeling the pinch on the contents.

ViewSonic prices of the G Tablet, the battery life of 8 to 10 hours of mixed use. From our first application, we think that number is probably in the ballpark, although the arrival of Adobe Flash support, which is expected to take its toll.

Toshiba will bring on Tablet PCs in U.S. and Japanese markets in 2011, a company engineer at CEATEC, said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. It was said to arrive in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Toshiba tablets coming in early 2011

As competitors other than Apple iPad, the Toshiba tablets is likely to use the Android operating system. Samsung and Sharp Galapagos Galaxy Tab using the Google operating system as well and were on display at the CEATEC, along with the 100th Folio

The Folio 100′s specs are a 1GHz, dual-core Tegra 250th It supports 1080p video content via HDMI, and sports a 10-inch, 1024×600 screen. Full-size and mini-USB ports should be fitted, along with an SD card reader like on Toshiba Satellite T215D-S1140 and a 1.3-megapixel camera.

Toshiba was once one of the most loyal partner of Microsoft and was previously the majority of its handheld efforts on Windows CE and Windows Mobile, but the relatively small market share and the appearance of the iPad are likely to have pushed him focused towards Android. Microsoft will not have a relatively modern tablet-based mobile operating system is Windows Embedded Compact 7 until early 2011.

Panasonic Toughbook C1 Rugged Convertible Tablet

Panasonic for their hard line of laptops are known, and have only introduced the Toughbook C1. more than enough charm and rugged good looks while smaller and lighter than his other hard-brothers, the C1 virtually anything you take can throw at it.

The 12.1-inch Toughbook C1 is a lightweight convertible tablet computer with a robust design and enough power under the hood to keep most people satisfied. At only 3.2 pounds with the single battery and 3.7 with the dual-battery option is also much less weight than any other rugged notebook on the market. In fact, it is even lighter than most standard convertible machines that are much less durable and still weigh more.

Panasonic Toughbook C1 Rugged Convertible Tablet

The Panasonic Toughbook C1 has a magnesium housing that has been tested to withstand drops of up to 12 inches on the side and 30 inches at the base. While most people do not throw their computers to this is much, this type of construction quality very reassuring for those in the field on a regular basis. The ergonomic hand strap on the underside of the instrument is also one great feature of the road warriors, like the bright multi-touch display and spill-resistant design.

C1 The Toughbook has a resolution of 1200 x 800, which is impressive for a 12.1-inch screen. Supports both pen and touch input, with zoom and other multi-touch gestures, all work well. In fact, the entire tablet fantastic experience, was almost zero, dedicated tablet buttons, and the kind of “this works just the attitude that has become known for the Toughbooks.

The keyboard on the C1 is a little undersized, and be just large enough to use for extended typing. The touchpad is a standard circular Toughbook affair, a design that seems to be equally loved and hated, and always takes some getting used to if you do not use one before. The ports in the offer is good, with three USB, Ethernet, an SD card slot, VGA, and even an old-school PC card slot like on Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5066.

Performance wise, the Toughbook C1 is doing well, with an Intel Core i5 processor, superior to much of its competition. The Intel HD on board graphics are OK, if not brilliant, but nobody did this is a gaming machine. The unit is equipped with a single battery that last about 5 hours, with a second battery can be purchased and installed to almost double this time.

The Panasonic Toughbook C1 is to combine an amazing mobile computers to the harsh attitude of the Toughbook line with the need ultra-portability of many Road Warriors managed. While it is not the fastest processor or graphics in the world, I can not say a single bad thing about this computer to think. Except maybe the price, with configurations from about $ 2,800.

Rumor: BlackPad (BlackBerry Tablet) to cost $499

Just in case you have any doubt that Apple has called the shots called for almost every tablet-style device in 2010 to life was, there is a rumor that the upcoming BlackBerry tablet is a $ 499 price tag have. This is the same price as the base model of Apple’s IPAD or the Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17. Oh yeah, and the BlackBerry tablet called probably BlackPad … remind you to be something?

Rumor: BlackPad (BlackBerry Tablet) to cost $499

We had already heard that the pill shipping would begin in November. The latest rumor brings a few more details (which may very well be wrong). Word on the street is that Taiwanese OEM Quanta is the tablet for Research in Motion to build. RIM hopes to 2 million units laptops review by the end of 2010 ship, and another 8 million units next year.

That sounds pretty optimistic. But if you told me that Apple would iPad 3 million in the first three months I had not thought likely to either sell. I think we are about to find out whether the IPAD is just a hit device from a single electronics company or, if there is demand for an entirely new class of tablet-style computers and space for several companies in this space to compete. We know that RIM is not just the only company to initiate a tablet this year so check out the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Upgrade.
