Dell Vostro 3300 Laptop Review

Positioned between the business-oriented Latitude and Inspiron lines, the mainstream consumer, Dell Vostro always been the type of computer that half is for personal use, half of which for business: It’s for the casual professional. The Vostro 3300, part of a new line of Dell, a 13-inch laptop with a rather thick frame and a standard voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 processor. It is not as smooth as the more expensive Vostro V13, much of its design ideas from its high-end Dell Adamo (the original model, not the newer XPS version) but it still has a bit of Adamo magic in appearance and metal casing. More importantly, the 3300 price – from $ 700 for a Core i3 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive – makes it very affordable.

Dell Vostro 3300 Laptop Review

The Vostro 3300 is not going to turn heads, but it is one of the best, most affordable and lightweight for small 13-inchers we’ve seen, with its only major drawback is battery life. It is so beautiful, we wonder why Dell has not offered this guy mainstream consumers more eager.

Design

The Vostro is designed to hover somewhere between personal and business, and that is exactly what the design of the 3300 states: black metal and define the outer edges of square-off at the front and back, and slightly rounded edges. The Vostro 3300 comes in Aberdeen Silver (which is what we had) in Core i3 configuration, with the possibility of adding or Brisbane Bronze, Lucerne Red color schemes in the i5 configuration for an additional fee. Overall, the design lies somewhere between the trendy and the more utilitarian Adamo Latitude.

Plain, matte-black ThinkPad-style defines the interior of this minimalist Dell via the keyboard deck to the material around the Webcam. A few lit media controls and a backlit button above the keyboard are the only flashy touches. Because this Vostro is a little thick and square bottom half, there is room for audio to fit in / out jacks, an SD card slot and Wi-Fi toggle switch on the front, although a bit tightly packed together in the middle under the trackpad.

The keyboard of the Dell Vostro 3300 is similar to those we’ve seen on other recent Dell laptops: It is best described as a flat keyboard with individually raised keys. Although there is no number pad, it’s easy to type on and feel comfortable during long writing sessions, and the keyboard is edge-to-edge, to maximize the compact laptop. The keyboard on our model was not lit and that is not available as an upgrade option at this exact model, but there is a Dell Vostro 3300, a backlit keyboard on the Dell website starts at $ 1,400.

Dell Vostro 3300 Laptop Review

Above the keyboard, a small illuminated touch-controlled media bar with basic play / pause and volume functions. It is helpful, but not overly so for a business-oriented machine. These can be better spent on video conferencing and other productivity enhancing related switches. On the right are a few of these LED indicators for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and battery status.

The trackpad is broader and more responsive than some brands we’ve seen. The plain separate buttons below are nothing special and can be slightly larger, but at least they’re not designed.

Features

A 13.3-inch LED-backlit display on the Dell Vostro 3300 has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, which is standard for most laptops up to 15 inches. These screens also come standard with anti-reflective, which is much rarer. The experience we had was excellent – the screen is the glare-free quality of a matte screen, with the edge found in a glossy finish. Text and video were easy to see in any light.

The included 2-megapixel webcam better clarity, sound and light sensitivity than most Webcams we encounter, making it perfect for video conferencing. A small LED light indicates the camera is in recording mode. Although the professional organizations of the cameras, Dell’s selection of cartoon-like effect overlays in the bundled software, the camera can only be described as cheese-ball.

Dell Vostro 3300 Laptop Review

There is only one speaker on the Vostro 3300. It’s located on the left edge of the bottom half of the laptop, and although it sounds loud and clear, the off-center position makes it a poor choice for playing movies. Should you choose to break with a DVD to take, you may want to pack some good headphones.

The Dell Vostro 3300 does not have a huge selection of ports, but it provides eSATA. It lacks HDMI out, but that is a feature that remains almost universal for all laptops (except for Macs). Fortunately, at least, there’s Bluetooth.

Performance and battery life

Configuration options abound in the Vostro 3300, as is often the case with Dell laptops. Tailor the Web site or a Dell Core i3 or i5 processor along with 2GB RAM configurations up to 4GB and 250GB to 500GB hard drives, all at 7200 rpm. RAM can be expanded up to 8GB. Despite i3 and i5 Core processors are 64-bit ready, Dell has opted for 32-bit version of Windows Home Premium OS standard. Fortunately, upgrading 32-bit to 64-bit Professional Professional is free.

Depending on the supporting software, memory and other options selected, the Vostro 3300 with the price can climb above $ 1,500, where it no longer seems like a bargain. We would recommend that you bring software services to a minimum and focus on basic needs. Our network configuration straddles the border of what we would consider to be paid before looking elsewhere.

Dell Vostro 3300 Laptop Review

Intel’s Core processors i3 and i5 are both more than enough for a user’s multimedia and multitasking needs. The i5 processor is particularly faster, but we would not be opposed to downgrade to a Core i3 based on our previous experience with the CPU, although our benchmarks on the Vostro 3300 are limited to the i5 configuration. It is ideal for most business needs, including PowerPoint, but our system tends to be a bit noisy, and after a few minutes of dedicated video streaming hot.

Far as graphics go, there are not to speak of, except for Intel’s integrated GPU. This machine is perfect when dealing with video playback, but it can not handle games than casual or browser-based ones. Dell does offer discrete graphics – an Nvidia GeForce GPU 310M – its highest-end Vostro 3300 configuration.

The Dell Inspiron 3300 ran for 2 hours and 5 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the included four-cell battery. Everything under the 3 hours on a thin and light notebook is disappointing, and although the Vostro uses a lower capacity four-cell battery, it’s March 1 in an otherwise strong design. Yes, this is a budget laptop, but few business customers would want such a short amount of battery life while traveling risk. Upgrading to an optional eight-cell extended-life battery is a must.

Dell Latitude D620

The D620 is Dell familiar matte silver and black color scheme, ready, and it looks pretty good. There is a single, polished silver catch, that the lid is secured in the middle.

Once you open the lid comes with a 14.1in widescreen display that’s both bright and vibrant present. There are no high contrast glossy coating on the screen, but that’s not surprising for a business notebook. The minute you start with a Latitude, you know it’s a step up from Dell Inspiron series. That’s not to say that the Inspiron notebooks are not good because most of them are, but the width is on the needs of demanding professionals who crave quality, not only fulfill functions. Let’s face it, the Dell Latitude range for the Lenovo ThinkPad brand is going, and when it comes to quality, few will argue with the ThinkPad credentials. Credit to Dell, the Latitude D620 look and feel like a premium product .. Dell Latitude D620 Review

Dell Latitude D620 Review

Dell packs a good mix of features in a lightweight five-pound frame, including the fastest Verizon Wireless EV-DO connectivity. Write in a variety of security options and blazing dual-core performance and the Dell Latitude D620 is the best choice for companies large and small.

The D620′s ergonomics are first class. The full-size keyboard has a good feeling (even if it is a bit mushy), and unlike some past Latitudes button clicks are quiet. The system comes with a pointing stick, touchpad, and a number of mouse buttons for each. We also appreciate the dedicated volume and mute buttons above the keyboard, and the practical Wi-Fi Catcher Network locater (an LED when a wireless network is available, without turning the system shows).

Dell Latitude D620

To improve the durability, Dell has wrapped the package in a magnesium alloy exoskeleton. The hard drive is shock-mounted, but it offers no active hard drive protection, such as an acceleration sensor. The keyboard is spill-resistant.

Our test system was equipped with a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 processor and 1 GB of memory configured. The couple has a pretty good score of 219 in our MobileMark 2005 benchmark test. The integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 graphics engine is adequate for typical business process tasks.

Battery life from the included six-cell battery was a good 4 hours and 25 minutes. The optional nine-cell battery ($ 99 pre-configured) should be up to seven hours.

The 80GB hard disk is plenty for a portable, and we liked the inclusion of an 8x DVD + RW/DVD-RW drive. The D620 has no memory card slots, but you do get four USB ports. Lift the cover matte, dark silver and find a 14.1-inch widescreen display. The 16:9 format is ideal for frequent travelers, because it gives you extra screen real estate without the extra height. have seen in contrast to some of the higher-resolution screens, we see we found the 1280 x 800-pixel resolution from our test model slightly.

Dell Latitude D620

Horizontal viewing angle for the screen are excellent, but decreases the brightness when viewed from above with the lid open less than 90 degrees. The wide display is also a natural fit for movies, although we found more blur on action sequences than on competition. The tiny built-in speakers deliver enough volume for personal and business use but offer very little bass.

Other features include a choice between EV-DO (included in this price, at $ 179) and HSDPA ($ 225), and its embedded antenna and radio that you do not need a PC Card. The dual offer could make the D620 the platform of choice for multinational companies or those who travel abroad, since HSDPA is widespread in Europe.

The D620 offers excellent performance in our EV-DO speed tests with an average of 498.4 Kbps. Dell attributes its performance (HP and Lenovo use Sierra Wireless card for its EV-DO notebook computer) edge to the inclusion of Novatel Wireless Modem Card Dell and its antenna design.

The wireless broadband option, in addition to the 802.11a/g standard system Wi-Fi radio. In our tests yielded the radio relatively low throughput (11.63 Mbit s at 5 feet from our access point and 7.01 Mbps at 50 feet).

Dell Latitude D620

Dell has focused on security with the D620. Here you’ll find a fingerprint reader and an integrated smart card reader to restrict the access. If you would like more protection, the D620 comes preloaded with the Embassy Trust Suite by Wave Systems. The suite handles multi-factor authentication (password protection, a fingerprint reader and a Smart Card slot), pass wordn administration for end users, secure e-mail (via TPM) and PKI support.

If you need a powerful, always connected thin and light notebooks and how the idea of a widescreen display, the Dell Latitude D620 is currently the best choice.

The Intel Pentium T4200 2GHz processor will not come to your system to a halt, but it works behind them with the Core 2 Duo moniker. Although the T4200 is a dual-core processor and supplement with 4 GB of memory is admirable, ranks the performance of the system scores last, when it against the MD7801u Gateway, HP dv6t Set (1054CL) and Lenovo Y650. It makes up for this shortcoming in other ways, however, as the bundling of 4 GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive. This is obviously not for those made with 10 different windows open at work. Dell Inspiron 14R

But while this machine is a strong performer, he sacrifices battery life. Dell Inspiron 14R Review

Dell Inspiron 14R Review

For mainstream laptops, where is the Dell Inspiron is one of the most popular products on the market. Traditionally available in a variety of configurations with many optional features and a flexible pricing, the Inspiron serves as Jack of all trades between laptops, but is not a master of all in all.

The Dell Inspiron 14R is a slightly new design iteration of the regular Inspiron series, slim with some touches and colors that make it a bit more like a Studio series laptop. While these changes are largely cosmetic, the overall impression of the new Inspiron is slightly better than what came before.

Dell Inspiron 14R

Available in a variety of configurations ranging from 14 inches to 17 inches and at prices from low to slightly high-end, ready to see the landscape of Inspiron laptops R, user, cover a broad middle range. Our Inspiron 14R, a 14-inch laptop with an Intel Core i3 processor and ATI Radeon HD 5470 dedicated graphics, a good all-round machine for a mainstream user to a relatively reasonable price of $ 800. We have seen some better values from manufacturers such as Samsung, but at least, the Inspiron is not overpriced.

Like the previous Dell Inspiron, the plastic materials dominate on the Inspiron R. The outer cover and palm rest area of an internal substantially metallic brushed metal veneer, but it is just that, as they are plastic, too. The R comes in a metallic Mars Black, and for $ 40 extra, you can get in Peacock Blue, Tomato Red, and Pink Promise. The shiny material does not take fingerprints as much as we had expected, but the cover is slightly bent out of plastic.

The chassis of the Inspiron R-series has introduced a “hinge-forward” on the last Mini 10 Netbook design. What this means is, the upper lid connects to the base about an inch in from behind. The reason for this design was the lack of battery bulge or a slight shift of the screen is closer to the keyboard, but the R-base very thick at the rear end and the rear shelf is still a kind of bulge – it just does not stick out the base.

Dell’s nearly edge-to-edge keyboard is a flat design with a slightly raised texture on the keys. It is easy to operate, and the top media keys are fortunately function as MacBooks to Apple’s vice versa – you can directly raise and lower volume without pressing the “FN” key. The touchpad below is larger, matte surface and is usually more comfortable than the previous Dell laptops that we have used. The discrete buttons below are nothing special, but are sized well and work well. Overall, the Inspiron R-keyboard-touchpad is better experience than the average.

Dell Inspiron 14R

The LED-backlit 14.1-inch glossy screen has a 1366 x 768 pixel native resolution that most laptop displays is about 13 inches and 14 inches. Video and web pages look crisp and colors were sharp and text, but pictures have a little washed out look on extended view. We were also on the volume and sound quality over the impressive stereo speakers, located under the palm rests on the bottom. The “SRS Premium Sound” label on the bottom right corner of the screen at first made us shrug, but at least the audio experience had enough oomph to promote TV shows and movies with the speakers. A dedicated software is an eye-catching touches Dell Dock on the top of the screen centered. It acts as a launcher, images, Webcam, Web browser, e-mail and movie and music playback modes, act a little like your own applications Apple’s Dock, but much less flexible and more vulnerable combines pre-installed trial version promo bloatware.

Above the screen is a 1.3-megapixel webcam for video conferencing and photographed. The camera has a decent frame rate and an OK picture quality. Videos will be shown that the microphone had good long-sensitivity, but the video and photo resolution had some graininess in our normal office lighting.

The 14R has a good number of ports and I/O connections, including HDMI, eSATA, and an internal Bluetooth antenna. But scattered because of its thick-bottomed design, the Inspiron ports around the sides and back of the laptop. One USB and VGA connection with the plug is located on the back, which could be easily used for laptops as desktop replacements, but tends to be more cumbersome for travel and casual use.

Dell includes 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive in the Inspiron 14R, we reviewed the above average specifications for a mainstream laptop. With our configuration, the laptop costs came to $ 780 on Dell’s website for instant savings, plus an additional $ 40 for the color red, making it to $ 820th Inspiron laptops 14R start as low as $ 479, but you can forget about i-Series Core CPUs at this price: the entry-level models have a puny Pentium processor P6000.

Dell Inspiron 14R

Most laptops use Intel Core i3 the same CPU, so it’s no surprise that most Core i3 laptops we’ve seen have similar performance. It’s a great affordable processor that is capable of better than average Core 2 Duo Multitasking and video streaming performance. The Inspiron 14R configurations up with a Core i5 option for those who crave more speed.

Better still, this has particular Inspiron 14R configuration a dedicated graphics card in the form of an ATI Radeon HD 5670 GPU. When playing Unreal Tournament III, their videos with 72.3 frames per second at 1200 x 768 pixels or 55.9fps carried out in its 1366 x 768 pixel native resolution, both are very respectable numbers. We also tried the recently released Transformers: Cybertron War, and it playable, even if found something prone to emotion. These graphics setup is ideal for casual and mainstream users, and is more than capable in most mainstream games. Hardcore gamers, of course, should a further option. Slightly less expensive options are 14R with integrated Intel HD graphics for those who prefer to avoid playing time available for savings.
