Logitech G19 Programmable Gaming Keyboard Review
We were big fans of the two-color LCD-equipped Logitech’s G15 gaming keyboard, but we can not say we find that adding a color screen of the $ 200 price tag for the new G19 model warrants. Yes, it’s nice to have a full color image or even put a video on screen while you play a game (imagine watching YouTube videos during a long drive Griffin in World of Warcraft, no alt-tabbing out). With time, the G19-user developed software library will even thrive, as it did for the G15. But with relatively few color-specific applications available even a few months after its release, we can not recommend spending more than double the price of the G15 to the G19-color screen and a few design tweaks. Until the software comes around the G19 is usually a well-designed, expensive novelty for the PC gaming elite.
Destruction of the screen for a moment, the G19 keyboard itself is only slightly more impressive than the latest version of the G15. The main core design offers the same crisp keystrokes, the same 12 “G” keys on the left. Like the G15, the G19 gives you three different switchable modes, so you effectively end up with 36 customizable keys, along with on-the-fly macro recording. Logitech also includes another feature of its G-series keyboards, a switch that disables the special “Windows” key late, so you do not accidentally switch on your desktop while playing with an errant key.
New for this model (apart from the color LCD) is his ability to recognize five simultaneous keystrokes. Macro-happy gamers and digital artists, in particular, should appreciate that feature, which opens a higher level of control of repetitive commands. We are also pleased to see that the G19 now has two USB 2.0 ports. The G15 is stuck with USB 1.1, not so fast. Anyone who regularly transferring large amounts of data between a computer and a portable storage device or media player will benefit from that extra bandwidth.

Other smart features include a drum-style volume above the G19′s number pad on top of which you will also find a range of easily accessible media playback controls. As before, the G19 tires in iTunes, Windows Media Center, software and other media apps. Last but not least, the new, non-LCD-related highlights is the option to choose from 16 million different colors for the backlit keys. To customize the colors of the only-thing-profile Logitech intuitive software that allows you to link three different colors to the three-mode programmable buttons for the ‘G’ keys. We wish her a special button to scroll through at least a few preset colors, though. We also wish Logitech software configuration would be to consolidate into one application. Instead you must bounce around between the G-series Profiler Key for setting up the G keys, and a separate manager app for the built-in LCD screen. This brings us finally to the color LCD.
Like the G15, the G19 offers half display, presumably to minimize the number of times you switch from one game to the Windows desktop at the time, your in-box to check, or other information to get. Unlike the two-tone model of the G15, the G19 will get full color output and a larger 320×240 screen size. Logitech includes 11 different applications that you use on the screen of the G19, including a clock, a system performance monitor, an RSS reader, photo and video players, and an app that lets you play YouTube videos. All these programs have an option screen – accessible via both the LCD Manager software and via a series of screen menu controls on the keyboard – that the content source folders and other adjustments.

The G19 comes with 46 built-in support for PC games, and four different applications, including Ventrilo, the popular third-party voice chat software beloved by many PC gamers. “Support” for different titles essentially means that the screen looks different information, like statistics, character and ammunition counts. We have not tried the game on the list, many of which are outdated, but we never found the game-specific information useful while playing. We see a few options that would the LCD screen more usable, such as giving an extra inventarisatie screen or an in-game map, but we have not seen that kind of functions implemented in the handful of titles that we tried. We have, however, like Ventrilo plug-in that enables you to know who’s talking, which can be useful if you do not know anyone in your World of Warcraft guild with the voice.

Potentially more exciting is that, as with the G15, Logitech also a software development kit for the LCD of the G19 belong. It took a while for the enthusiast community to embrace the G15 kit, but once it did, all kinds of mini-apps became available for public download. We do not expect the G19, the software library to have flourished in the three months since release of the keyboard, but without a critical mass of custom applications, it is difficult for us to say what kind of programs can come from the community. You can use some of the homebrewed apps on the G19, G15, but not all of them work on the new color. We can not help but wonder what effect the high price of the G19 will have on the acceptance in the enthusiast community. If fewer people the G19, which surely will affect the amount of the collective effort behind the eventual development of software to buy.
