Sharp intros 5-inch UMPC with Ubuntu

Sharp Japan has today a new entry into ultra-mobile PCs with the PC-Z1, unlike the Netwalker known. Unlike most UMPCs, which are based on either Windows or Linux versions of the custom, the PC-Z1 Ubuntu Linux 9:04 used as a platform.

The process is carried i.MX515 800MHz Freescale CPU, there exist only 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory when a microSD memory card slot, users can extend it by another 16GB. Users communicate through a 5-inch, 1024×600 resolution touch screen and the device is also light on under 1lb. The very small form factor makes it ultra-portable device, while a built-in Wi-Fi connection can access the Internet away from these locations.

The Netwalker can boot into a fast start-up screen in about 3 seconds, allowing users to quickly meet e-mails and other low-key tasks. There are 68 keys on the keyboard of tightly packed UMPCs, Sharp, and claims a 10-hour battery life.

Sharp has reported the contents of plans specifically for the PC-Z1, including language and other dictionaries, novels and comic books create. With the Netwalker, Sharp hopes to create a new market, straddling the fence between notebooks and smartphones.

The Netwalker ship is in Japan on 25 September, with prices not yet announced. A U.S. release of the UMPC is not expected until sometime in September 2010. It is in white, black and red.
