Toshiba Satellite T215D-S1140 Review
Just because everyone else do not mean it is the right choice for you. Someone heard her mother, and this time someone Toshiba, Intel Atom CPU, contrary to the trend and the choice of an AMD processor for its 11.6-inch screened T215D-S1140. We think that a good reputation, especially considering its low price $ 469. This netbook is not perfect (in particular, we would love to see a longer battery life), but in general, and expressed in a non-netbook processor into what otherwise receive a Netbook a good way to outstanding performance without giving, is to portability or a lot of money.
The T215D-S1140 comes in red, white and black. We tested the black model. The lid has a wavy cross-hatch design and easily attracts fingerprints. Inside the area around the keyboard is glossy black, with the splendor of the newly machined industrial parts. The pattern here is an original way a plaid-meets-dog-tooth. We found it a little busy.
Definitely a step up from your average netbook, the Satellite T215D-S1140 is what you buy, if you want the light weight is a netbook, but you do not feel that you had settled for a close and underpowered machine. On 0.7×11.2×8.2 customs, the T215D-S1140 the size of a standard notebook, but is light enough for easy transport at 3.3 kilograms. The screen measures 11.6 inches diagonally and widescreen proportions (a 16-to-9 format). The native resolution is 1366 x 768 pixels and the LCD screen with LED backlight. The picture was clear and bright, though not as good as any other notebook. A 0.3-megapixel Webcam sits above the screen. In our tests, saw the colors on the webcam image, no matter washed as we adjusted the picture.
The keyboard and touchpad are both full size and we give them good marks. The keyboard uses the raised island (or Chiclet) design popular in smaller notebooks. Unlike the similar keyboard on the Samsung N150 Plus, we found this very comfortable. The buttons are rounded and soft, and they have a nice give them. Typing feels effortless and satisfying.

Port selection was a pleasant surprise. The left side has the power port, an eSATA/USB port (to power a portable device, even if the laptop is asleep), a memory card slot (supports SD, SDHC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard and formats ) and rarely for a netbook-HDMI connector. The last point you leave it to your living room TV if you want to enjoy your videos on a larger screen. The right side includes microphone and headphone port, two USB ports, a VGA monitor port, an Ethernet port and a slot for-all are typical dishes for a netbook. There are no ports or connectors on the front or back, so that the T215D-S1140 an elegant look. The six-cell battery provides the netbook a bit more strength in the back, but also provides a comfortable angle for typing. Although there is no integrated optical drive, Toshiba will sell you an external for $ 69.
Besides the screen and keyboard to the bottom step in the price with T215D-S1140 is the processor. Instead of finding the Intel Atom chip in most Netbooks, it runs on a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon peppi Neo K125. The chipset that the processor supports the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics card installed, and you also get 2GB of DDR3 RAM. All this pays off in benchmark results, which are often well above the average.
On our PCMark Vantage benchmark, the overall system performance measures, this machine deserves a value of 1,918. Compare the merits of the 1310 of the Asus Eee PC 1201pn, one of our favorite netbooks, which lists for $ 30 more ($ 499).
To test the CPU specifically, we run the three tests, the satellite and held the lead in all of them. It ended the iTunes test, where we convert 11 MP3 files to AAC, in 7 minutes and 31 seconds. The 1201pn took double the time (18.31 clock). The gateway LT3201u, also an AMD processor and lists for $ 450, takes 13 minutes and 38 seconds. On our Windows Media Encoder test converts the T215D-S1140 our standard test video file in 18 minutes and 55 seconds. Compare that with the Asus Eee PC 27:01 1201pn pokey and the gateway machine slightly faster 17:56. On our Cinebench 10 test, all the available CPU cores of the taxes that redeemed T215D-S1140 with a score of 1,725. The 1201pn managed only 857 here, and the Gateway 1242.

Multitasking is the only place where we have a genuine performance hiccups, but we do not want it to be a serious problem. We ran a full system scan with Windows Defender during re-running our Windows Media Encoder test, and it all seemed too much for the T215D-S1140. Windows Media Encoder seemed to freeze several times during the test and start running again would be installed after a few minutes. It is no surprise then that the terrible time multitasking Satellite (45:21) was. The Asus Eee PC 1201pn for example, took 32:31. Just to make sure that the satellite glitch does not have a serious, comprehensive multi-tasking, we played a large MOV file, songs played in iTunes and Windows Defender all running at the same time. Everything worked well. We can not say why the Windows Media Encoder test jammed up repeatedly during our multitasking scenario, but it seemed an isolated event.
For a Netbook, all the CPU scores very well, and it’s fair to say that a significant improvement over the average netbook. They are still far from competing, but from the rental of this machine with a real ultra-portable laptops. They reaffirm our Netbook classification for the CPU performance (ie, slow as a rule), but when you put on a netbook is the AMD processor this is definitely an advantage over the typical Intel Atom CPUs.
AMD is almost always a safe bet when it comes to improve graphics performance, and we were not disappointed in this regard here. For running our 3DMark06 test at a resolution of 1,024 x 768, earned a score of Toshiba Machine 1237. The Asus Eee PC 1201pn did much better with a score of 1948 (but it has a second-generation ion Nvidia graphics processor), but the Gateway LT3201u (with the same Intel graphics) a hair fared worse 1216th Many netbooks around 150 on this test, so these are all good marks, but they will still make for a limited game experience. It should be possible to run some older 3D games with the eye-candy settings turned way down or off to draw, but the last DirectX 10 clear (or DirectX 11) title.
Perhaps more importantly, considering the size of this machine, able to deal with video playback better than the average netbook. When streaming video from multiple sites during the test, we were always satisfied with the results. The picture looked crisp and clear. The speakers output is pretty weak, but that fix some external speakers if you to view online video plan. If you are looking for a handy multimedia machine, maybe let the kids use Netflix while you sit with the main computer or to store and show home movies, there is a strong performer. The HDMI connection will come in handy for home theater enthusiasts.

As mentioned above, the Satellite T215D-S1140 six-cell battery, and we expect much more from him than the 2 hours and 36 minutes we got to our demanding battery-rundown test. (The test includes streaming full-screen video wirelessly, until the battery runs out.) The Asus Eee PC 1201pn took 3.17 on the test, while the Gateway LT320 did even better, enduring for 04.09. Despite the strong performance satellite values, think hard if you spend a lot of time between sockets.
When it comes to software collections, Toshiba could have done a little more lift to the satellite. It’s the usual collection of Toshiba applications received, with the most prominent being ReelTime Toshiba and Toshiba Bulletin Board. Both are firmly fixed on the task bar. ReelTime is useful if you need to return to a previous version of a document, it has a visual list, jump so you can easily return. Toshiba Bulletin Board is a virtual kitchen cork board, where can publish the user or the family photos and notes. It’s a nice idea, but we have trouble imagining anyone actually use.
You also get a trial version of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, but it is a 60-day trial version limited to 25 uses before it freezes the user. (Okay, that Microsoft Works is here to get the loose as well.) Since students are an important market for this netbook, we would have liked to have seen more music or multimedia applications included.
The satellite is equipped with an industry-standard one-year warranty, which gets you a year worth of parts and labor and a year of battery life. Toshiba also offers 24/7 toll-free telephone support and online support via the Web site also pretty standard for the industry. The site also offers software drivers and answers to common questions on the well, but nothing too extensive.

While you’ll pay a little more this Toshiba Satellite, have you more than make up for it in fast processing and comfortable typing. If the life of the battery will fail to know your needs, this is a strong contender for those seeking a netbook. Considering how many people are disappointed at the end netbooks in their slow speed makes the Neo-driven power a convincing argument for a netbook is in AMD.
