Gateway NV59C09U Review
For many consumers design is an important part of their laptop-buying decisions. Gateway seems to make sense, this is evidenced by its Gateway NV59C09U, a 15-inch Notebook with Core i3 processor and Blu-ray combo drive. It’s a bit more attractive than its predecessor, NV series, but keep in mind that the Gateway NV5933u will cost less and offers essentially the same package, only in some other place. There are a few other essential differences, but really, unless you love the NV59C09 design. On NV59C09u’s prices, there are too many competitors who offer similar or even better values. The Samsung R580, for example, has a larger hard drive, a Core i5 processor and discrete Nvidia graphics cards.
The Gateway NV59C09u is a laptop that is thinner and lighter than the almost identically configured NV5933u we reviewed recently, but to be honest it is not, most people who are not students laptop configurations with a magnifying glass register. A matte silver finish with a wavy lined pattern on the outer and inner cover keyboard deck is a little better looking than the older Gateway NV-design, but by a small degree.
A change in the design NV59C09 is a flatter lid hinge, which is a leaner look to the back edge than the more voluminous tubular hinge design NV other laptops. The view inside is nice and clean: shiny black plastic around the use glossy screen and a keyboard and a small mirror strip above the keyboard that a close network switch houses.
The keyboard and touchpad are on the NV59C09 redesigned to mixed results: the broad, flat keyboard is still technically flat versus raised, but the spaces between the keys have been enhanced to generate increased a bit-key effect, even if the gaps are inserted. It makes the key a little more comfortable, but the chances of falling down crumbs and gunk between the keys act like an annoying necessity. We do appreciate the dedicated volume buttons above the adjacent number pad, a step that we would want more laptops. There is also an interesting “social media” button, like little smiling people up Gateway software application brings glomming Facebook, Twitter and other social sites looks together. That is not all that do not already programs like Digsby, but it’s nice to see integrated as easily.

The touch pad is separated only by thin raised lines on the keyboard deck – otherwise it is basically an extension of the rest of the palm rest surface. We want an in-depth, dedicated touchpad area, but it worked fine all the same, comparable to a decent surface to other LV models. The button bar is flush and a rocker (we prefer two discrete buttons), but it’s a step better than the oversized, angry thin strips mirrored at the lower end of Gateway NV models. Oddly though, the new design looks cheaper.
The LED-backlit 15.6-inch glossy display on the Gateway NV59C09u has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, which is standard for most notebooks up to 15 inches. At this size we have seen higher resolution displays – the lower resolution is a bit away with the included Blu-ray drive, we were a little surprised, the resolution is not up to at least 1,600 x 900 getting pushed . Blu-ray discs looked good, but not significantly better than a good DVD player to experience. To really show off your discs, you will probably want to go to the HDMI output.
In front of the screen provides a high-definition webcam for video conferencing and recording capabilities, with a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 1, 024th This is one of the few upgrades from the NV5933u, the VGA-quality video ever could. We appreciate the spec bump, and the quality is better than the average for laptop webcams. Skype software is pre-installed along with a large collection of other programs, we are not sure we need Gateway to load for us.
The built-in speaker – above the keyboard and thin black mesh grille, the small dust particles located all too easily caught – have better than average volume and bass for watching movies, but really no better than other laptop speakers NV we have tried. You are looking good enough and certainly loud enough for video, music and Web chat, but they are not knockouts sound.

Somewhere along the way to a lover always redesign, the Gateway NV59C09u actually lost one of its USB ports, now only three. Unfortunately, no counter offer has been made to sweeten the deal. Bluetooth is still M.I.A.
As we mentioned above, 4 GB DDR3 RAM and a 320GB hard drive is included but these are the same specifications of the NV5933u enjoys. For the higher costs, we would expect at least a 500 GB hard drive.
We have said we pleasantly surprised by the performance and value of the new Intel Core CPUs i3, which technically are surprised at the lower end of the new Core series of processors. Even at the lower end, this Core i3 still better than most Core 2 Duo CPUs, especially when it comes to multimedia and multitasking. We could not reach Blu-ray playback, streaming Hulu and word processing at the same time without problems, and found that the slightly slower processor. But in this price range are i5 Core processors in laptops offered many competitors and feature faster speeds and multi-tasking performance.
As far as graphics go, there’s no talking to the outside of Intel’s integrated HD processor. This machine is perfect in dealing with any form of video playback, but it can not handle games over casual or browser-based.

The Gateway NV59C09u ran for 2 hours and 32 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the six-cell battery. All under 3 hours on a mainstream laptop is disappointing. Apple’s MacBook recent, by comparison, last well over 5 hours. This laptop fared slightly better than the NV5933u, but by a matter of only about 15 minutes. It is essentially the same experience in a new shell.
Gateway is a two-year limited parts and labor warranty with the NV59C09u that a year is better than most laptops. Support is via chat or e-mail as well as 24-7 toll-free telephone line on the Internet, although there is no clear evidence of any phone number on their website (it’s 800-846-2301). An online knowledge base and driver downloads, can be compared to relatively easy to find.
