The UL80Jt-A1 is completely black with an attractive brushed metal lid. The deck is glossy plastic, while the bottom is matt plastic. This uniformity of color and design gives the system a sleek but understated look, but tends to pick up fingerprints. In many ways, this notebook is just like the Samsung Q430-11, except the Samsung has a silver cover.

At 4.8 pounds and 13.5 x 9.6 x 1.1 inches, the UL80Jt-A1 is the same size and weight as the UL80Jv, that is not the thinnest and lightest 14-inch notebook on the block. The 14.0-inch, 1366 x 768 glossy display on the UL80Jt-A1 provide clear, sharp images in our test. While watching a DVD of Dark City and a 720p video stream of Fringe from Fox.com, playback was smooth and the colors were true with minimal noise and not grainy. However, viewing angles leave something to be desired. At 45 degrees from the horizontal center, clarity, color is good enough if we look at the desktop, but when watching video, color began to turn and wash out, to say nothing of the reflections.

When playing Far Cry 2 at 1024 x 768-pixel resolution, 21 fps UL80Jt-A1 managed just below the category average. At its native resolution of 1366 x 768 and detail set at high, that number dropped to 14 fps, which is not playable, just above the category average 12 fps. Even if you need to save power and to use the integrated Intel graphics, you’ll hardly notice the difference in daily tasks. With integrated graphics, we were able to zoom in and scroll around Manhattan in Google Earth and 720p video playback without a hitch.

The UL80Jt-A1 is equipped with 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium installed, and is loaded with CyberLink’s Power2Go and label printing for burning optical discs and label creation. In addition, the system has a host of ASUS features, including ASUS multiframe for managing multiple monitors, ASUS Data Security for encrypting files and folders, and ASUS SmartLogon face recognition. Conclusion

Of the many Optimus 14-inch notebooks we reviewed so far, the ASUS UL80Jt stands out as one of the best. For $ 900, you get an excellent condition for a system of this size without sacrificing too much performance. If you are looking for something with a bit more graphics muscle, the Gateway ID49C11u is the better option. But when the day mobility assets gaming prowess, the UL80Jt is the way to go.

Neither model has new second generation of Intel’s Core i-series processors (previously codenamed Sandy Bridge), but for mainstream systems like this, that an upgrade can take a while to store hit shelves, especially given the recent challenges Intel with the new platform.

At prices approaching Apple’s MacBook (and topping 13-inch Toshiba R705), unless you stick to the idea of Nvidia’s GeForce 425 graphics system, there are better priced or better-looking laptops out there. That said, the U41JF really has a good battery life, and never really let us down, which may sound like faint praise, but praise nonetheless.

The biggest immediate problem we had with the Asus U41JF was the overall look. The brushed metal lid and palm rest are standard enough, and not offensive, but that’s coupled with a glossy black keyboard tray (matte black keyboard) and screen edge to extend to the four edges of the chassis. This gives the entire facility a gaudy two-tone look that we have previously criticized other systems. If you can not go monochrome, or at least keep the colors in the same family.

The body itself is square and boxy, but not too thick for a 14-inch system. We are not aesthetic elitists by any means, but with laptops especially is the same core set of components, the visual flair is often what sells one model over another.

The keyboard has the same flattened, widely spaced keys as most laptops today, which is a style we sometimes ask for island or Chiclet keys. The keys are a good size, with large left Shift and Enter keys, but the right shift key gets unjustly curtailed. We are not a fan of the extra row of buttons some laptop manufacturers are adding to the right, which usually Page Up, Page Down keys and other movements. They can throw you touch typing fairly easy, making it difficult to hit the Enter and Shift keys when you’re used to pointing to the right of the keyboard. A generous touchpad is centered below the keyboard, but the basic sound multitouch gestures are hit or miss (but the same can be said of most Windows laptops now). A nice touch is that you can scroll vertically by either wiping with a finger along the right side of the touchpad or by using the Mac as a two-finger method. Below the touchpad, a rocker bar takes the place of the separate left and right mouse buttons. We strongly prefer separate buttons, but Asus seems married to the rocker bar concept in most of its products.

The 14.1-inch screen has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, which is typical for a midsize laptop. Off-axis viewing was good horizontally, but the image faded quickly when viewed from above or below. The built-in Altec Lansing speakers are decent for a laptop, and at least good enough for a personal video.

There is nothing remarkable, or missing from the collection of U41JF of ports and connections. But for almost $ 900, it is possible to extras such as a mobile broadband antenna or even a Blu-ray player if you shop around.

U52F combines the dark metallic gray with navy blue almost black, a surprisingly trendy combination that easily beats the looks of many business use of laptops.

The keyboard is chiclet-style, with a compact numeric keypad. Despite this, the numeric keypad never felt cramped or busy. It is big enough for number crunchers to use with comfort, but not moving the full-size keyboard too much for the traditional typists. The elevated wrist rest offers an ergonomically comfortable typing experience that will be appreciated by anyone who spends all day on the keyboard. The trackpad has a silky matte finish that slides right under the fingertips. The right and left buttons are combined in a bar, but it’s responsive enough that few users will wish for two different buttons.

Weighing 5.9 pounds, the U52F is much lighter than comparable 17-inch laptops, like the Dell Inspiron 17R (6.7 lbs), making it a laptop that you would like to tote to and from work or school. Because of its low profile makes it easy to catch, just 1.3 inches thick.

Although BBL9-U52F Asus does offer a powerful mix of efficiency and convenience, it does not offer many extras. That is not to say that the U52F-BBL9 not a trick or two behind their hands. Unlike the recent HP Pavilion – which all have complaints about the multitouch – this feature is perfectly executed. It reacts when you use it, not the problems with false positives, and it requires no further attention.

Performance

Compared to other recent notebooks in the $1000 range, the U52F-BBL9 appears to be fast, powerful system. The PCMark Vantage score of 5908 places it next to the HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl (5677) and Samsung R540-11 (6190) in terms of processing power. All three use Intel Core i5 processors with U52F-BBL9 using the M460, a small bump of the M450 used in the HP dv7-4083cl and Samsung R540-11. Our Photoshop CS5 test runs by several intense processing tasks that most systems slow as a snail. While high-end graphics-intensive systems easy jog through them, most midrange systems lurch and stumble, often earning periods longer than 6 minutes. The U52F-BBL9, on the other hand, scored a respectable time of 4:45. It did equally well in our video tests, filling out our video encoding test in 2 minutes 41 seconds compared to 3:26 scored by the Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7046.

The Asus A1B B43J-Stream comes with ATI, AMD automatic switching technology, the laptop between the ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 chipset change for 3D taxing tasks and Intel GMA HD (i5) integrated graphics for lower-end office tasks possible. Design

Asus has never been one to skimp on the design, which is why the N53JF-XE1 is covered with aluminum, such as the XPS 1915. The top is lightly brushed with a tone somewhere between bronze and silver gray. This material also has a slimming effect, as the N53JF-XE1 seems thinner than the plastic counterparts, the Samsung R580 and Dell Inspiron 17R.

Even so, it’s not the best desktop replacement to take on the road, though, as her 6.3 lbs frame is as heavy as the XPS 1915 (6.3 lbs). Desktop replacements, such as the Samsung R580 (5.4 lbs) and Acer Aspire TimelineX AS5820T-5951 (5.2 kg) are one pound lighter and better suited for traveling.

Even laptops with 17-inch widescreen displays, like the 17R (1,600 to 900) can not scale that high. Photos and high-definition videos, as you can imagine, looked absolutely gorgeous.

Asus kept the bar low with the user experience. The N53JF-XE1 avoided chiclet-style keyboard that any other Asus laptop seems to be these days, and instead went with a traditional. The same houses N53JF-XE1 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 460M CPU as the 17R Dell, and Dell XPS 1915, but it came out on top in Handbrake (2:37) and Cinebench R11.5 (2.43) benchmark tests that stress the processor. Factors affecting this exception can load the software (less third-party applications eat less resources) or the processor itself was tweaked to run at full speed at all times (usually at the expense of battery life). Adobe Photoshop CS5 (4:56) scripts memory-intensive test also performed at a high level, despite combining the same amount of memory (4GB DDR3).

If you’re a hardcore gamer, the GeForce 425 is part of the latest 400-series of Nvidia’s graphics chips that support DirectX 11. If the Nvidia chip is not in use, either by a game or video transcoding, the system will automatically revert to using the Intel integrated chipset technology that Nvidia called Optimus. This technology extends battery life, but that’s only half the battle, the laptop is still a big enough battery.

With the amount of power built in, even a switchable graphics technology could not help the 48Wh (6-cell) batteries. In our battery tests, the N53Jf-XE1 took a measly 3 hours and 15 minutes, that would not be as bad as Asus sold an extended battery option. By comparison, the XPS 1915 (3:48) combines a larger 6-cell battery (56 Wh) and offers a 9-cell option. Admittedly, the N53J-XE will probably remain a member of a wall most of the time.

If you are the Dell XPS 1915 Configuration I discussed with the Asus N53JF-XE1, the latter would emerge victorious forward in almost every performance-related task to compare. The N53JF-XE1 also offers top-of-the-line components, such as a Blu-ray drive and a resolution of 1080p, but it costs less than the Dell XPS 1915. For my money, the lack of an extended battery option and a number of high-end features (backlit keyboard and webcam 720p) are the better buy the XPS 1915, but the N53JF-XE1 is a great alternative.

We put in our review of the Asus Eee PC 1015PEM that the dual-core Atom slight performance improvements delivered without additional charge battery life or your wallet; offer dedicated Ion graphics an additional performance boost when it comes to video playback and even comes little gameplay, but at a higher cost in both instances. The 1015PN with Ion is more expensive than the $ 60 Dual Core Asus without.

Even with an over-$ 400 price, the Eee PC 1015PN begins to edge uncomfortably close to 11.6-inch sub-notebooks like the Dell M101z that offer better performance. And despite the premium price tag and features, the Eee PC 1015PN corners cuts to other Data: Windows 7, only 1 GB of RAM, and a lack of a HD screen feel like disconnects. This is the best of all three Eee PC 10-inch Netbooks we’ve looked in the 1015 line, but the cost can be a deterrent to some.

How many of the previous Eee PC from Asus Netbooks 1015PN has a sleek, teardrop-shaped side profile, wider at the back and tapers to a point at the nose. It is largely the same tapered/curved design we have on most Asus Eee PCs in the last year or so seen, and it is difficult to apply to get excited about another step-like structure. Smooth surface finish on the back cover and keyboard cover guard against fingerprints, but still show some ambient glow. The Eee PC line comes in red, blue, white and black, our black model had a flat surface, which showed a few spots fingerprint. The back cover is fairly thick, and the whole unit feels solid, even a little tight, but the compact form felt easy to stow. Having no protruding edges or batteries other than a slight bump on the rear underside is a plus.
