Windows 8 on Tablets

Since Dell’s leaked roadmap showed a Windows Tablet 8 tablet at the beginning of 2012, there has been plenty of news and rumors about Windows 8, earlier in development than most people think, at least on the ARM front. ZDNet’s Mary Jo, who is on top of most things Windows, has heard differently, saying that the tablet will likely only a tech demo for the OS, if at the end of 2012. Samsung FX2490HD 24-Inch Monitor Review

With its chrome effect and are dark brown bezel, this is a great looking 24in monitor. It’s actually an LED HD TV, but Samsung says it is primarily a computer monitor. This is strange, because all the features you would expect from a modern TV present: a well-designed remote control, a seven-day EPG and interactive services via the red button. There is also picture-in-picture support, so keep an eye on the game while working on a document by using the PC input.

The only disappointment is that there is no support for Freeview HD.

On the back are two HDMI inputs, a VGA interface, a Common Interface slot (for pay TV with Sky Sports), plus headphone and optical S / PDIF outputs. Has his own connections for component video and Scart inputs, mainly because there is no room for the full-size connectors. Converter cables are included in the box, though.

A large, glossy panel includes all the connections to make things tidy. However, this means you have to remove a USB flash drive for media playback. It supports photos, music and a wide range of video formats including MKV, AVI, MP4 and VOB.

Menus look a lot slicker than any computer monitor we’ve seen, and there are many options. In addition to TV-specific settings, such as creating a list of favorite channels, there are controls for adjusting sharpness, hue, flesh tones, white balance, black level, dynamic contrast, shadow detail, gamma, color space and much more. In fact, the large number of options bewildering and overkill for most people.

Still, we were happy to see that the settings are saved for each input. Also, we quickly realized we would need them if none of the three color presets were not good. Dynamic produces exaggerated colors and sharpness, Standard and is saturated in yellow, and Movie can be washed. Unfortunately, even after one hour’s worth of tweaking, we were unable to get accurate colors. Skin tones were always yellow and the contrast was not eliminated. Moreover, we could not remove the over-processed appearance by a combination of sharpness, color processing and noise reduction.

When looking at our test Blu-ray movies, we immediately noticed a lack of detail compared to a good quality LCD TV, and test scenes also looked grainier than usual. The color problem was, the only time we did not notice was in cartoons where the vibrant colors were appropriate.

We had to color and contrast when connecting a PC via the VGA tweak, but no matter what we tried, we could not achieve a sharp, well-scaled image when using a DVI to HDMI converter. FX2940HD generally is not great as a PC monitor.

Whatever our gripes so far, there is a bigger problem: the price. The FX2490HD a TV tuner, media player, and a variety of inputs, but it’s about twice the price of a standard 24in display. Considering you can buy a better quality 32in HD TV for similar money, the FX2490HD is bad value.
