Microsoft SideWinder X8 Gaming Mouse Review

The Microsoft SideWinder X8 Mouse is the first gaming mouse from Microsoft BlueTrack Technology for better job tracking capabilities. With a new, more ergonomic shape and on-the-fly DPI switching, the SideWinder X8 best wireless gaming mouse on the market? Let’s take a look.

Although the SideWinder X8 is designed with emphasis on compact size, Microsoft managed to keep the size and shape comfortable enough for everyday use and makes it smaller than the original SideWinder. The new shape of the SideWinder is perfectly balanced for right-handed users and offers a much more comfortable, rounded shape than the previous SideWinder mice. The location of the main buttons seems to make perfect sense. The top / bottom design of the forward button and back buttons are upgraded to the buttons easier to use … a boon for users of the original SideWinder. While most notebook travel mice are physically smaller than the Sidewinder, none of the smaller wireless mice I’ve used are as feature-packed or as balanced in my hand.

Besides the standard buttons, the quick-start button (the silver SideWinder logo) to launch the Games Explorer in Windows Vista or the IntelliPoint software in Windows XP. The macro record button lets you program the in-game macros for faster game play. Three buttons beneath the scroll wheel allows you to DPI sensitivity at any time to adjust and the buttons are backlit for better visibility in a dark game room.

One of the biggest selling points of the original and the new SideWinder SideWinder X8 is the built-in LCD screen. The LCD screen (which also uses a red back light) displays the current DPI settings and macro recording icons to reduce the need for on-screen displays that crowd your desktop or in the way of a game.

Microsoft has a software CD with Intellipoint make a range of settings on the SideWinder to adjust, but the mouse is designed to plug and play, so you do not need to use the mouse software to install.

Another nice touch is that Microsoft has three different sets of replaceable mouse feet, each made of different materials (like Teflon) so that users can slide the mouse for any surface covers. The unused sets of mouse feet are stored in one convenient cable anchor / accessory box that plugs into the USB cable. The anchor / accessory box looks a bit like a “hockey puck” on your desk, but it’s a nice place to store the cord when not in use.

Daily notebook computer, the SideWinder X8 was surprisingly easy despite the plethora of buttons for the mouse. Once the USB cable is connected to a Windows Vista or XP machine will immediately recognize the mouse and you are ready to work or play. We even tested with the mouse using Windows 7 and everything works fine.

Once the SideWinder is up and running is a real pleasure to use … if you’re a right-handed gamer. One problem with a nice design erogomic like this is that the project be made for only right-handed or left-handed users. In this case, left-and right-handed users of happiness. Cursor movement and control is fast and smooth and DPI sensitivity is easy to change thanks to the preset buttons. The metal scroll wheel, back button and forward button to add a touch of rugged class. The replaceable mouse feet and adjustable weights to make it much easier for the mouse to adjust exactly how you want it.

A minor annoyance I had with the original SideWinder mouse was left next to the forward and back buttons and macro record button. The sharp edges in this region of the mouse made it somewhat uncomfortable to these three buttons. Fortunately, Microsoft listened to the criticism and the new X8 has a much softer feel in this area. Overall this is a comfortable mouse.

The new BlueTrack technology, the X8 more sensitive and more accurate in terms of rapid and fine / detailed movements than the original SideWinder. This is due to the improved image processing of 13,000 frames per second offered by BlueTrack. The improved accuracy is much more noticeable when using a notebook with a 1080p screen is not as clear with an older 1280 x 800.

The new magnetic USB cable to charge the mouse makes a relatively quick and painless process. The cable is very durable and magnetic connector in place very securely. I really like the cord because if the battery dies you the power to connect and keep the mouse as an old-fashioned wired mouse while the cost X8. The only major problem I had with this mouse was less-than-stellar battery life that the internal rechargeable AA battery. Most wireless mice will be charged after a day of serious gaming, but I found the X8 need for a charge almost every other day. Sure, the battery power of the built-in LCD screen and backlit buttons more, but what’s the point of a “wireless” mouse that needs to stay connected to a wire for charging?

Conclusion

The Microsoft SideWinder X8 Mouse is a great upgrade for older SideWinder gaming mouse. The X8 offers improved ergonomics, better accuracy with BlueTrack technology, and is finally wireless. On the other hand, the new SideWinder lacks the adjustable weight and extremely rugged feel of the original SideWinder.

The most obvious potential problem with the X8 is the impressive battery life. If you are an active gamer (playing games for hours every day) you can expect to need to recharge the mouse at least once every other day.

Notebook users are willing to put up with the size and weight of the SideWinder X8 (and the “hockey puck” receiver / charger) will be very happy with this mouse. Admittedly, the SideWinder X8 is not very convenient for notebook users as a compact Bluetooth mouse, but the performance of this mouse is unmatched.

Details other than the use of newer Core i5 and i7 processors were not given, but it was hinted that Apple would rely on more than just a gear to sell the systems like on Acer AS5745DG-3855. It would be “a number of improvements of his own” that were not disclosed. One possibility is to borrow technology from the MacBook Air, including a faster solid-state drives (SSDs), thinner design and better handling of wake and standby mode. Intel’s Light Peak is an option as well, but no other details have emerged point to Apple as a very early customer.

Regardless of the Pro can lower prices of the new MacBook Air SSD and focus have given a much greater long-term sales boost. Even with its older and inherently lower storage processor, the Air sales numbers approximately 50 percent of the MacBook Pro. Although modest, the original design of Air Mac used to sell a niche in just enough numbers to be viable. Unofficial but real figures could possibly have seen Air ship 750,000 units last fall. The air will not join the Pro obtaining Sandy Bridge-era processors and can wait until June for his performance.

Toshiba Honeycomb Tablet coming in Q2 Soon

Toshiba has released a statement saying that the tablet (which is the working title) is in Q2 2011 – but we knew that already right? Right – and despite a load of new press shots, there is no confirmed information that we do not know already know about CES and (apart from a few small bites on Resolution + video enhancement technology).

Toshiba Honeycomb Tablet

So why has the Japanese electronics giant kicked the hype machine if there is nothing new to report? Who knows? Perhaps it is trying to ensure that we not forget that Android 3.0 effort, while the likes of HTC, LG, Samsung and Motorola have them off than at MWC in Barcelona. Whatever the reason, we just hope that the launch of the 10.1-inch, 2 Tegra tab touting Android is better than the previous effort from Toshiba – the Folio 100, which was pulled from shelves last year not long after the Sales continued to Flash problems.

Talking of the Folio – this was also shown on a Toshiba event was attended by on Tuesday as well as Acer AS5745DG-3855, and we were assured that all Flash problems are now behind us, and now has the official recognition of Adobe lead on the re-release, which is coming soon. The packaging Froyo tab will complete its work cut out for it realistic though. In a market place that will soon be flooded with honeycomb devices (not least one of its own manufacturer) it will certainly be incredibly budget-friendly if it is to attract a customer base.

Acer AS5745DG-3855 Review

3D, if you believe the marketing hype, the future of displays, and so with so many of us sit in front of computer screens for a fair part of the day, why should not they get in on the action too? Acer’s Aspire 5745DG promises 3D performance, and daily potential, thanks to a combination of an Intel Core i5 processor and NVIDIA 3D Vision technology, but is this the notebook to us wearing silly glasses?

Our Aspire 5745DG-3855 review unit is certainly an impressive machine, both physically and in terms of the core specs. Measuring a large 14.9 x 9.8 x 1.25 to 2.27 inches and tipping the scales at 6.6 pounds, it’s heavy for a 15.6-inch notebook and the standard 9-cell battery protrudes considerably from the base. Design-wise, it is consistent with other Acer machines we looked at recently, with decent plastics and a mixture of shiny and matte silver and black.

Acer AS5745DG-3855 Review

Inside there is a 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5 450M processor combined with 4GB RAM and a 500GB 5400 rpm hard drive. Graphics are courtesy of NVIDIA GeForce 425 GPU, although no Optimus switch between the onboard Intel HD GPU and the discrete chip, in fact, the Intel graphics are basically disabled because there is no option for anything but the NVIDIA chip use. It powers a 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 screen, and although we have liked some extra pixels in there, it’s a decent – and very shiny – panel. Viewing angles are good horizontally, although the combination of slightly reduced vertical angles and the glossy finish can find the ideal position of the lid a little trickier.

The broad width of the Acer Aspire 5745DG has permitted slot in both a full-size keyboard and separate numeric keypad, which the fashionable chiclet-style design follows. It’s a good keyboard, too, with nice little bow and weighted response when typing. Below is a multitouch trackpad, offset to left to fall under the space bar, and Acer is also a button to disable it yourself accidentally hitting.

Connection options available, including WiFi b / g / n, gigabit ethernet, HDMI, four USB 2.0 ports and audio in / out (with S / PDIF), along with a DVD burner and multi-format memory card reader. No Blu-ray, but that seems a bizarre omission in a media-centric device, or eSATA, USB 3.0 and ExpressCard. A webcam above the screen and microphone on the key specs.

Acer AS5745DG-3855 Review

In the box there is a range of NVIDIA’s 3D Vision goggles, charged via miniUSB. This advantage of the 5745DG 120Hz display, synchronize with an infrared transmitter built into the ring and flicking the view between the two lenses, while the GPU serves each half of a 3D image alternately. The end result is a 3D image 60Hz.

The Acer Aspire 5745DG runs Windows 7 Home Premium, and when we complained about before the series of trials and pre-loaded bloatware. Some of these are own creation Acer, treatment webcam, registration and driver update, but you also get a taste of Microsoft Office and McAfee Internet Security, Google Toolbar pre-installed, Skype, Norton Online Backup and more. The end result is a system that sluggish feel to the first power-on, and we wonder if Acer – and other manufacturers – will want to see and offer the referral fees from software companies in favor of a favorable first impression for the user.

NVIDIA 3D Vision system is currently supported by more than 450 games by the company’s own count, and of course there 3D graphics to think of too. Since there is no Blu-ray drive, that content will likely be downloaded or supplied on a disc, NVIDIA preloads sample media that performs well, but 3D content online is still in its infancy.

With no Blu-ray on this specific SKU, you’d be forgiven for assuming the 5745DG-3855 was aimed at gamers. Unfortunately, the mid-tier GPU constitute a stumbling block for the system-intensive modern titles. We began our benchmarking with Geekbench, a synthetic test of the processor and memory, and as you would expect the CPU i5 put in a decent show. The 2.4 GHz Aspire 4814, scored more or less similar to the HP Envy also reported 14, and about 200 points behind the Gateway ID49C 2.53 GHz.

Acer AS5745DG-3855 Review

PCMark unfortunately failed to GeForce 425 GPU to detect, so instead we ran Cinebench. Acer scored 20.67fps in OpenGL and 2.15pts in CPU. In terms of real-world performance, we had no problems with normal daily tasks such as browsing with multiple tabs and windows open, or simultaneous playback of video and audio.

However, recent games like Call of Duty 2 had difficulty with the power to offer only comfortable playing as a knife was taken to the quality settings. It is worth remembering also that 3D games more of a demand on the GPU rather than 2D titles: the NVIDIA chip to the left and right eye to create graphics for each frame, it can be a significant toll on frame rates. Need for Speed: Shift is more successful, with the 3D effect appears impressive.

Ironically, the 120Hz panel really showed his worth during the regular 2D gaming and multimedia, where – as in 120Hz HDTVs – faster content such as sports were smear-Fri Glasses-free 2D representation also avoids the inevitable loss of clarity occurred when playing 3D, which can leave darker movies and games dark and uninspiring.

With a 9-cell battery, you would hope that the Aspire 5745DG would top the chance to offer in terms of runtimes, but the i5 Core CPU and GPU always-on chewing their way through a large amount of power. Acer to offer up to 4 hours during normal use of a full charge. The absence of Optimus is a particular frustration, though the GT 425 is able to under clock itself dependent on the activity and the load. Still, it’s not as efficient as Intel HD GPU. With a mix of WiFi and browsing through some media playback, we managed to get 3:30 minutes of runtime. Playing DVD content that constantly undermined down to just under 3 hours.

Acer announces Iconia Tab A500 Tablet

Acer wants to highlight MWC 2011 in Barcelona by the introduction of the 10.1″ tablet device known as the Iconia Tab A500, where it will be powered by the new Google Android OS 3.0 Honeycomb. This sleek and smart device will be a dual-core Nivida Tegra chip 2, the procedure from the inside where it should have short shrift with multi-tasking it.

Apart from that, the 10.1″ WXGA high-definition display like on HP Pavilion p6720f, you can surf the Internet in greater clarity when watching HD videos is a snap. If you’re not too happy, you can always videos to an HDTV via HDMI output. Other hardware specifications include a 5-megapixel camera and a rear-facing front-facing HD lens, Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity and support for Flash 10.1.

There is no word on pricing details yet, but we know it will hit the market this April. The tablet market looks quite difficult with so many additions this year – we’re stoked to see who the winner as the dust settles.
