NoteSlate touchscreen tablet for $99

EBook readers are not all blessed with color and normally takes a little more. What if you could color an eBook reader for only $ 99 to get as well as HP Mediasmart EX490? We talk about the note late, a touch screen tablet that a 13-inch 750 x 1080 pixel display has touted as “eInk”, though there is no confirmation whether the same E-Ink displays used on eBook readers such as Amazon Kindle.

NoteSlate touchscreen tablet for $99

When this tablet is ready for prime time in June, you can choose from several models that offer a white background with black foreground or the other way around, or one which offers text in green, blue or red. There is also a 4-color publication that combines everything, but we suspect it might cost a bit more. Touch and pen input are both supported and it will provide over 180 hours battery life. The first release of this device will support simple drawing, storing notes and even MP3 playback. A future version will also view PDF and text, with even newer versions touted to OCR handwriting to offer.

HP’s webOS tablets leak with 4G

webOS HP’s tablets were eventually discovered for the first time in a leak that has given some of their first concrete details. In addition to the nine-inch Topaz, a seven-inch counterpart known as the Opal is due to arrive with a heavy focus on e-reading. Both the Palm designed slates were identified by Engadget as front cameras, micro-USB for docking and what is a unique premium audio “focus with three speakers.

HP 7- and 9-inch webOS tablets

WebOS the sample screen in the record indicates no major clues, but does suggest that the Palm team will be spun at least some mild optimizations for larger screen sizes like on HP Mediasmart EX490. Besides a display area, the soil launcher now has a search button that presumably would lead to the touchscreen keyboard Just type searches.

Cellular networks, a clear role to play and has a clue to the ship data. Together with a Wi-Fi-only version, the Opal come in models for AT & T’s HSPA 3G network and Verizon LTE for 4G would be available in September. An AT & T 4G version would come in July 2012. Topaz’s release schedule was not mentioned and may ship sooner.

HP has a Feb. 9 event where the Topaz would make her first appearance with other webOS smartphones. What devices first ship, they will first Palm to make a significant impact of HP after the acquisition and will demonstrate HP’s first real attempt to compete directly with Apple, Motorola, RIM and others sending new or updated tablets of this year.

HP Mediasmart EX490 Review

Windows Home Server (WHS) is an alternative to a network-attached storage (NAS) device for sharing files between all computers on your network. It is actually a modified PC running a customized version of Windows. WHS HP’s latest model, the MediaSmart EX490 has a number of intriguing features that make it more attractive than the previous Home Servers.

HP Mediasmart EX490 Review

The EX490 can automatically copy music, video and photos of all computers in your network, make them accessible from any connected PC via Windows Explorer or through a web interface. In our tests, but also worked perfectly as an iTunes music server and as a UPnP media server.

It is possible to watch videos stored on the EX490 from a remote PC to the Internet via a web interface. First they will need to be encoded in a specific, low-resolution MPEG4 format. This happens automatically in the background. With its 2.2-GHz single-core Celeron processor, this is not a quick process, though.

More useful everyday features include the ability to network a USB printer to your PC to share. It can also back up selected files from each of your computers on a schedule. Individual backup schedules can not be set, though, so all your computers back up at the same time. It can keep older versions of your files in case you need to return to them, but older backups will always be cleared to make way for newer ones.

HP Mediasmart EX490 Review

Files stored on the EX490 is accessible from any Internet-connected computer and the computers on your local network. For this work, Windows Home Server will attempt to configure your router automatically if it supports UPnP port forwarding, otherwise you have to do this. Pictures stored on the EX490 can be automatically uploaded to a photo-sharing service like Flickr or Picasa, although we had trouble getting it to recognize our Picasa account.

The EX490 is equipped with a 1TB hard drive. It has three additional drive trays, which are easily accessible, for adding extra drives. It was quick to copy both large and small files on our Gigabit Ethernet network. Indeed, it was faster than most NAS devices we’ve seen. The WHS system does not support traditional RAID arrays, but you can enable directory replication. This is similar to RAID1, and automatically duplicates your selected folders to another disk.

Configuring the EX490 is easy with the logically organized setup program. Additional features such as a BitTorrent downloader or FTP server could be added if necessary.

HP’s MediaSmart EX490 WHS is the best we’ve seen. It’s fast, easy to set up and quiet. It has some unique features, but some, such as video re-encoding and streaming, have limited appeal, so it’s not for everyone. It is best suited for demanding users whose needs are not met by such a high-end NAS Synology Disk Station. For more basic storage needs, such as a simpler NAS Western Digital My Book World is much cheaper.

HP Mediasmart EX490 Review

Because the HP MediaSmart Server EX490 essentially uses a JBOD disk configuration with redundancy, it will not match the performance of comparable NAS devices a powerful RAID 0 option. It made competent, but was understandably slow in most tasks. The closest comparison is Turbo NAS QNAP TS-419P, which they managed to surpass most tasks. However, for the most part was considerably slower than other four-bay NAS devices.

That said, the EX490 MediaSmart Server file transfer performance will be enough for an overnight backup, and it is even suitable for streaming high-definition content via a Gigabit Ethernet network. However, more intensive concurrent tasks and perhaps a little too much pressure on the HP NAS device, making it more suitable for individuals and families.

Triple-Boot Evolve III Maestro Tablet

Tablets are great if you choose the right one, otherwise you might end up stuck with a thin plate of crap that you never use. If you are in the market for a new tablet, but you just can not decide which OS you need to buy Evolve III has a new tablet called the Maestro, which is perfect for those who have a hard time deciding.

Triple-Boot Evolve III Maestro Tablet

The tablet is a triple boot rig. Yes, three operating systems on a single tablet. The thing will start up Windows 7, and Android MeeGo. MeeGo Linux is a flavor that makes open-source fans who want something other than Android happy.

The catch is that I see with only 32GB of storage and loaded aboard three operating systems, you must eat your storage. The tablet runs and Atom N475 processor, 2GB RAM like on Dell Studio XPS 8100 PC, a 32GB SSD and a 10-inch screen. The machine also has WiFi and 3G. It is very portable at 1.8 pounds and should ship in Q2 at an undisclosed price.

New LG X170 netbook

I have not seen the LG X170 netbook on sale in the U.S., but I have a chance to check the mini-notebook in person at CES last week. This guy is remarkable because it comes with an optional 1366 x 768 pixel HD screen and an optional 1.5 GHz Intel Atom N550 Dual Core processor, although the basic model has a single core Atom N455 chip and a standard 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display like on Dell Studio XPS 8100 PC.

New LG X170 netbook

The X170 on display at Intel’s CES booth had an attractive design with a pink lid, a chiclet-style keyboard and a touchpad with left and right buttons to clear. There is a RAM panel at the bottom of the computer, but no hard drive or wireless access panel.

Dell Streak 7 tablet coming soon

While T-Mobile is ready for the G-Slate launch later this year, it seems that the first 4G tablet available at T-Mobile USA, the Dell Streak 7. The folks at TmoNews their hands on a document showing that the 7-inch tablet Android will be available from the wireless carrier from February 2.

Dell Streak 7 tablet coming soon

The Streak 7 will look a lot like a larger version of the current Dell Streak 5-inch tablet will have the same Dell Stage software that runs on top of Android 2.2 function. But under the hood the new model will have a faster NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor. It will also connect to T-Mobile’s HSPA + network for mobile broadband speeds up to 21Mbps.

The Streak 7 has a 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display Gorilla Glass, 16GB storage kike on Dell Studio XPS 8100 PC, a 1.3MP camera and a front-facing rear 5MP camera and WiFi and Bluetooth. TmoNews also received a tip that the Samsung Galaxy Tab should be the end of her life at T-Mobile at the end of January. If true, it will probably be replaced by a new model soon – possibly with 4G capabilities. Verizon has already announced plans to offer a Galaxy Tab 4G LTE connectivity.

Dell Studio XPS 8100 PC Review

The Dell Studio 8100 is an affordable performance XPS desktop targeted at people who fit an all-around system that is not necessarily to tinker. It comes with an i5 750-processor, 8GB DDR3-1333 memory, powerful graphics nVidia GTX 260 7 and Windows Home Premium 64-bit. You can upgrade to a Core i7 processor for $ 115 more.

Dell Studio XPS 8100 PC Review

The Studio XPS 8100 i5-750 CPU running at 2.66 GHz, combined with abundant RAM and 1TB 7200-rpm hard drive, processor helps Windows 7 hum along smoothly. The machine scored a respectable 129 in our WorldBench 6 test suite, a brand pretty much on a par with that of the Dell XPS 435 desktop replaces. For maximum performance, however, it’s hard to look past the Micro Express Microflex 95B: That PC’s Core i7-950 overclocked processor and 3 GB DDR3-1600 memory catapulted into a WorldBench 6 score of 148.

The Microflex 95B dual-GPU GTX 295 graphics setup also surpassed Dell GTX 260 graphics card, despite its inclusion of 1.8 GB of memory. Example the Micro Express reaches 112 frames per second in our Unreal Tournament test 3 (1920 x 1200, high settings), compared to 37 fps from Dell. Dell’s results still solid high-resolution gaming machine for a competitively priced, though.

The Studio XPS 8100 also comes with the nVidia GeForce Vision 3D glasses. The stereoscopic glasses support a wide variety of games and working with a bunch of 3D films, too. You need a compatible 120Hz monitor for the glasses to work – and the good news is, Dell bundles a 120Hz-ready, 22-inch Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ monitor this system for $ 1429 prize. Remember that the 2233RZ (like many, but not all, 22-inch LCD) gaming limited to its native 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Dell Studio XPS 8100 PC Review

Dressed in a simple, two-tone glossy case, the Studio XPS 8100 is striking. Four USB ports are on the front – two on top and two hidden behind a bay door that also hides the spare 3.5-inch drive bay. The tested configuration is also a combo Blu-ray reader / DVD writer, and had room for one more 5.25-inch drive. A multi-card reader that supports all your favorites live on the upper front of the case. At the rear of the chassis are four USB ports, a FireWire port, 7.1 surround sound analog-out, S / PDIF connectors, and eSATA ports, and S-Video and DVI connections available on the twin graphics card.

Sliding side door of the cabinet reveals a cave-like space … without much room for expansion. The graphics card, the internal PCI-Express x16 slot. Tucked away near the hard disk, which is mounted vertically, and both components are bolted behind a metal guardrail. Although the system has an available PCI Express slot and room for an extra hard drive, fans can forget SLI, or even improve much beyond the basics. Everything is locked fairly safe, too, so you’ll have to break your screwdriver if you want to do any tinkering. You probably will not find much reason to futz around inside the chassis, but the cables are neatly tied with excellent airflow.

Among the bundled goodies is a generic, black Dell keyboard with standard (but useful) and browsing media shortcuts. The included mouse is a bit more impressive, the presentation of a pair of side buttons and a scroll wheel in addition to the standard two buttons, with a hotkey DPI on the back. On-the-fly DPI changes will be of paramount importance to gamers, but in general the mouse is comfortable, flexible, and worlds better than the standard two-button variety.

If you take into account the bundled monitor and Nvidia glasses, the Dell XPS 8100 is a well-priced multimedia workhorse that offers more than a nod towards gaming. Your upgrade options are limited, but if you’re not inclined to tinker, it’s definitely a machine to consider.
