New Gigabyte S1080 Windows slate

Gigabyte announced a new 10-inch Windows PC slate at CES earlier this month. But I did not get the chance to chat with people from Gigabyte on the show.

New Gigabyte S1080 Windows slate

The S1080 includes a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 Dual Core processor, 1GB. a 320GB hard drive and a 1024 x 600 pixel display. It runs Windows Home Premium and 7 supports VGA output, an Ethernet jack, and a USB 3.0 port likeon D-Link DNS-323. There are also a number of buttons to make navigating easier for Windows, including left and right mouse buttons. The computer has a capacitive multitouch display and comes with software that Gigabyte AppPark a small suite of touch-friendly apps.

Gigabyte’s convertible tablet-style netbooks produce for a few years, so the company is no stranger to Windows-based computers with touch screens. But this is the first Atom-powered PC from Gigabyte that I’ve seen without a physical keyboard. The tablet should start shipping in March. There is no word on pricing yet, but Gigabyte’s computers tend to not cheap.

Archos 48 Internet Tablet without GPS

Archos has quietly released a new Android-tablet with a 4.8 inch display and up to 500GB of hard drive space for $ 299. If the Archos 48 looks familiar, it’s because it is almost identical to the Archos 5 Internet Tablet, which has been available since 2009. But the new model lacks GPS and the $ 299 price tag is much lower than the $ 449 price for a Archos 5 dressed up with a 500GB hard drive.

ARCHOS 48 Internet Tablet

Still, you’re essentially getting last year’s specs on this model. The Archos 800 has a 48 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor like on D-Link DNS-323, 256 MB RAM, a 4.8 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, resistive touchscreen, and runs Google Android 1.6 Donut. Even without the Market for ships loaded, although I suspect that a hacked version of the Market and other Google apps like Gmail so easy to install on the Archos 48 as it is on the Archos 5.

The good news is that like other tablets Archos, the Archos Internet Tablet 48 excellent multimedia capabilities, supporting a wide range of audio and video codecs including 720p MPEG-4, H.264, and MKV video files. The tablet also supports WiFi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.0.

D-Link DNS-323 Review

D-Link’s forays into the NAS market have not met with much success so far. The DSM-G600 provides a good set of features, including wireless access, for the price – but we found the supplied back-up facilities relatively weak, and we were not impressed with the compatibility problems we discovered with some IDE drives.

D-Link DNS-323 Review

The DNS-323 represents D-Link’s next stabbing on network storage, and this time has gone instead of SATA drives. The unit is one of the smallest we’ve seen and are compact, matte black aluminum chassis is designed for two SATA drives of your choice to accept. The entire installation process is completely without tools – just push the face up to release it and then slot in a couple of drives. The back panel has a lever behind each bay to aid drive removal.

There is not much else to see, because the device contains only a single Gigabit Ethernet port for LAN connectivity and a USB port that can only be used for a suitable printer for sharing come. For the price, we would expect the option to external USB storage devices.

For testing, we used a pair of 250GB Western Digital WD2500 hard drives. After startup, we use the bundled Easy Search program to hunt the device on the network, discovering the IP address assigned to our router. If you are not using DHCP, the device uses the default IP address. The tool allows you directly to the web interface, which kicks off with how you want your discs served. You can have two separate drives, a single linear drive, a RAID-0 stripe or a RAID-1 mirror. Either way, you make your game, select your file format and place them on the device and format ready for use.

As with the DSM-G600, the device only supports a ext2 / 3 file systems and not FAT32 or NTFS. We have opted for a RAID-0 stripe and EXT2 for best performance and the device has about six minutes to the array.

D-Link DNS-323 Review

Once the device is restarted, the Web interface offers a Quick Start Wizard to set the administrative password, time zone and working details. The web interface is nicely designed, but despite a graphics refresh is clear that the DNS-323 is almost the same firmware as the DSM-G600 with only a couple of improvements.

A feature increasingly on the consumer NAS devices is the ability to function as an iTunes server, and this is one of the enhancements added to this firmware. The server is enabled by default, and you can select a location on the device to select where you want to import your music. Loaded with the iTunes client, the server automatically appears in the source side bar with all your downloaded tracks ready for playback. The device also offers UPnP media services for streaming to suitable media players.

Access to network shares is controlled with a list of local users and groups, security that is sufficient for home use. The possibility of using quotas to assign a new function, and this can reduce the amount of available storage space on a user and group basis. FTP services are on the cards as well, and restrictions can be applied to folders declared for FTP access. You can also limit the number of users can simultaneously access a folder and limit the amount of bandwidth available for each FTP directory.

Nero backup software included with the DSM-G600 has been launched and replaced by a single user copy of Memeo backup. This is much more advanced products, as it supports a wide range of backup destinations, offers optional backup encryption and after the first scheduled backup has run it will only secure file edits or new files, allowing for fast operation . The device also offers an unusual feature that backup files and folders on other systems that can be downloaded to a location on the device via HTTP or FTP to select. This is accessible through a separate administrative interface for your login details, the source URL, a location on the device to the files and copy a recurring schedule – ideal for website administrators.

D-Link DNS-323 Review

We had no problems securing files from an Iomega NAS device via FTP, although, as we saw with the DSM-G600, the status screen for each job shows the passwords for each login account in plain text – not quite security conscious.

Overall performance of a RAID-0 stripe was on par with D-Link quoted figures of 23MB/sec read and 15MB/sec write speed. We tested the real world performance by copying a 691MB video file from a Supermicro 3.2GHz Pentium D PC to the device which lasted 45 seconds, the average write speed of 15MB/sec. Copying the file back to the PC back an average read speed of 21MB/sec. Useful, you can power the drive off after so many minutes of inactivity, so you do your bit for saving the world and saving your data.

Conclusion

For such a compact NAS appliance, the DNS-323 offers a good set of storage features at a reasonable price, although we still have liked a greater USB functionality. The closest competitor to this device is the Thecus YES Box N2100, as it offers a very similar set of features including the iTunes server. However, the Thecus is not as well built and will get back about 50 pounds more. All in all, the D-Link is a solid, so spectacular, choice.

Motorola Atrix 4G laptop dock for $150

A final price tag is placed on the accompanying laptop dock Motorola Atrix 4G’s. According to some reports online, a Best Buy employee who spoke with an AT & T representative was informed that the laptop dock should retail for about $ 150 when it is released.

Motorola Atrix 4G laptop dock for $150

In case you’ve been living under a rock all this while Motorola Atrix is an emerging 4G Android phone by Motorola in essence, become just a laptop connected to the laptop dock. Given how the laptop is basically useless without the dock Atrix 4G, it sounds pretty expensive. Maybe shave $ 50 off the cost to do the trick. What do you think of the price of the Dock’s? Does $ 150 sound fair to you as well as Asus B43J-A1B?

Samsung planning to overtake Apple in notebooks shipments

Samsung is a significant 60 percent spike in notebook shipments in an attempt to get Apple notebook in the global arena, planning, vendors said Monday. It had shipped 10 million laptops in 2010, but hoped to move 16 million to 17 million this year. Both companies were virtually tied through the first nine months of 2010 and saw 150,000 more systems like Apple’s move, according to DigiTimes’ IDC numbers, or enough that Samsung was in range. The Korean company has not thought too much difficulty achieving its goal, since the in-house production of many of the parts it needs help predict its PC supply accurate.

Samsung planning to overtake Apple in notebooks shipments

Whether or not the target will be sufficient, the main concern. Apple shipped 23 percent more Macs during the fall than one year ago at 4.13 million, but the company has in recent years have a pattern of avoiding many of the usual post-holiday slump and could match or even Samsung. ASUS perhaps the most at risk, because the plan to ship 22 million PCs as well as Asus B43J-A1B, but not necessarily the same growth.

Samsung has often acted independently of Apple’s plans, but at CES, reported more of a direct intention to Apple to hunt. Both Slider and 9-series notebook PCs were more aware and focused on iPad MacBook Air buyers, while different audiences than the usual. The Sliding PC was a joint project with Microsoft to help Windows 7 gets a deeper presence in tablets.

Google’s Cr-48 Chrome with cute stickers

You might remember Google’s Chrome CR-48 notebook we reviewed it, and if you thought the notebook is not doing enough to physically look different from the competition, you’ll be glad to hear this latest update.

Google’s Cr-48 Chrome with cute stickers

Apparently the notebook now comes with a bunch of stickers that you can decorate Asus B43J-A1B. Of course the stickers do no magic to your notebook Chrome, but it helps keep your notebook unique look, at least until any new owner is given the same CR-48 stickers too. Still, it’s better than nothing, and we love custom work.

New MSI Wind U160MX

The MSI Wind U160MX is a new version of the MSI Wind U160 netbook was first introduced over one year ago. But there is one important difference: the U160x is available with a single or a dual core Atom processor.

New MSI Wind U160MX

The folks at Notebook Italia their hands on the new MSI Wind U160MX and have posted unboxing pictures and first impressions like on Asus B43J-A1B. For the most part, the computer locomotives as previous models. But there are a few subtle differences. The touchpad shape has changed and while there remains really only one button under the touchpad, there is now a small incision in the middle which should make it easier for the left and right with your finger to detect, without looking down to watch.

U160MX The Wind also comes with a new brushed metal style paint job and a silver black color scheme. The netbook comes with a 6 cell battery that is not even close to sitting flush with the case.

Asus B43J-A1B Review

These days, business notebooks have a wide range of needs. Professionals require a machine that delivers computing, networking options, links galore, and hours of the battery. The Asus B43J-A1B fills most of these needs, but battery life is a major concern, then this notebook will disappoint.

Asus B43J-A1B Review

Design

Although a large number of manufacturers, including Asus, have led to some fantastic business laptops on the market, such as the Dell Vostro 3300, most laptops like the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s tend to stick to the basics. The Asus B43J-A1B keep a conservative look, but puts a fashionable twist on the basic black black tie turns into something more.

The frame around the screen and the bottom of the chassis is matt plastic, but the lid and palm rest gets a stylish and protective aluminum case that resists scratches and will not attract fingerprints. The 14-inch widescreen display offers a resolution of 1366 x 768 resolution for 720p video viewing, and is finished with a 2-megapixel webcam, which has a built-in lens cap. It weighs a substantial 5.46 pounds.

The full-sized keyboard alerts the chiclet-style design that is so popular in consumer laptops, opt instead for a more traditional design. The keyboard is spill resistant, so you can have lunch at your desk now without the fear of a spilled drink, your computer at work to destroy. The touchpad is smooth and comfortable supports multi-touch, allowing two fingers to scroll and zoom your work machine.

Features

Connectivity is one of the most important aspects of a business laptop and the Asus B43J-A1B offers a variety of ports. There are three USB 2.0 ports (including a combined USB / eSATA port), optical drive, and connections for both phone and Ethernet. Connecting to an external monitor is also easier thanks to the VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort connectors. ATI Eyefinity also allows the connection of up to two additional monitors, so much more visual real estate.

Asus B43J-A1B Review

Security options abound, such as B43J-A1b comes with several built layers of protection. A biometric fingerprint scanner makes-based security. A Smart Card reader makes use of security-card-based authentication of users. Intel vPro IT provides remote access and automatic blocking of lost or stolen laptops.

Our test unit was 4GB DDR3 memory. The 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drive will probably plenty of storage space on its own, but users will still want to use the USB / eSATA port to be taken when connecting an external hard drive. The A1B B43J-34 also has an ExpressCard expansion slot for greater flexibility. Docking station support allows a quick connection to peripherals, power and communications equipment, but requires the purchase of a separate docking station.

For quick access to the web, the Asus has the same B43J-A1B ExpressGate instant-on environment that is used in several other models from Asus this year as the Asus U52F. A special express gate button allows you to express gate of a powered-down state, skipping long Windows boot times for direct access to the web has to offer.

Performance

Although B43J-A1B features a 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 560M processor, it is only 6,310 points scored in our PCMark Vantage benchmark, a score that left competitors in the same business area. Although the Asus B43J-A1B is still a competent machine that will handle the demands of professional computing performance is available for a comparable price. It laid the HandBrake video encoding test in 2 minutes 36 seconds and plowed through our Photoshop benchmark in 4:28. While those scores will not meet graphic designers and video editors, they are more than good enough for regular business professional.

Asus B43J-A1B Review

The A1B-B43J performed better when tested in the graphics processing, earning scores as well or better than competing laptops. It scored a respectable 4797 on low settings, and 3,345 native resolution on our 3DMark06 test. The A1B-B43J success in the 3D test is partly due to its discrete ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 graphics chipset. The A1B-B43J our gaming tests completed with a reasonable but unplayable scores. Despite the i5 Core processor and discrete graphics, this laptop is simply not the chops for high-end gaming, but it was not intended.

The Asus A1B B43J-Stream comes with ATI, AMD automatic switching technology, the laptop between the ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 chipset change for 3D taxing tasks and Intel GMA HD (i5) integrated graphics for lower-end office tasks possible. In addition, Asus power management tool reduces energy consumption by automatically switching to Intel integrated graphics when drawing power from the battery.

While there is plenty to love about this laptop, it could not squeeze out enough 48Wh battery life to last through a cross-country flight or even lunch. On MobileMark 2007, the B43J-A1B lasted only 2 hours and 20 minutes. While battery life will not be a problem sitting stationaire at a desk, plugged into a socket or docking station, it means you definitely will not you using a cross country flight, and able to struggle through a working lunch.

B43J-A1B Asus offers a powerful set of features and hardware, but falls short in performance and battery life flat on. The result is a laptop that most will find it sufficient, but some will find frustrating. As long as you do not stray from the wall power for more than a few hours, the Asus B43J-A1B offers everything you need.
