The Dell XPS 7100 is a cross-genre sort of desktop PCs. On the one hand, it has a fast multimedia PC with a six-core AMD processors and 1.5 TB hard drive. On the other hand, comes with an ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card, so it’s a contender as one of the better entry-level gaming rigs. Packed with great future-proof technology, the system will not break the bank price tag.

Design
The Dell XPS 7100 comes in a silver version of the tower that we’ve seen on the Dell XPS Studio 8000 (SX8000-1479UWH). The system is in a corner, so it seems to lean back, which makes it easier for the media card and optical drive bays and access the system sits on your floor. The matte silver color reminiscent of the colors seen on the German and Japanese luxury cars in recent years: a bit cold, but still unmistakably attractive. The system still has the embedded multi-card reader on the top, and a sliding door that two of the front of the system for USB ports. The top has an indented tray with two USB ports to connect cameras, external hard drives and the like. At the back are four USB ports with eSATA and SPDIF port. There is also an HDMI and DisplayPort on the ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card next to the DVI ports. Last but not least, there are two starting points for 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi card on the back. The system has the usual hidden optical drive bays, one Blu-ray player / DVD burner combo drive.

The system has a number of internal expansion room, including space for a PCI card, two hard drives, and an optical drive. There are plenty of ports and space-it’s just that most of the slots are already occupied. You have to pop off some of the included memory DIMMs if you want more than the included 6 GB of DDR3 memory, although 90 percent of the users of this system will not require more memory than that. You need a screwdriver to get and add components, but everything is well laid out and easy to reach. The ATI Radeon HD 5870 card has a crippling bracket, which is a great addition to a system for cross-country travel during transport. The bracket prevents the movement of heavy graphics, so you are more likely to get the system in one piece.

Features
The desktop comes with a 1.5 Terabyte 7200 RPM SATA hard drive, Blu-ray player / DVD burner and an ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics card. My review unit came with a pretty standard Dell multimedia keyboard and optical mouse. The XPS 7100 can be equipped with a TV tuner, but my configuration did not come with one.
The system is notable for what it lacks, namely bloatware. Office no trial, no Wild Tangent games. The system comes with 15 months of McAffee Security Center, part of the purchase price, which is something I would recommend. The closest bloatware I could find was a copy of Skype. The system comes with the Dell Dock, a launcher app that floats on top of the screen. In the dock, there is a shortcut to get more software. The shortcut launches a Dell Software Store website, which is how I would like users to get a hold of software to load on their systems. Instead of bloatware forced on users, they can use the Dell Software Store and find only what they need or want to download.

Performance
The Studio XPS 7100 performance keeps you moving with its six-core AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor and ATI Radeon HD 5870 gaming-class graphics card. He was able to use the Windows Media Encoder (WME) test to be completed in a speedy 38 seconds, and Photoshop CS4 test in 1 minute 38 seconds, which is quite fast. To put it in perspective, a dual-core system like the Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Core 2 Duo) is a bit slower on WME and a smidge faster CS4 (0:49 and 1:32, respectively). Intel CPUs generally perform better than AMD CPUs CS4.
The Studio XPS 7100 as configured here trumps its brother, the Dell Studio s7100 1060NBK, on 3D benchmark tests, thanks to the faster graphics card. The XPS 7100 is fully playable in game three of four tests, including Crysis at 1,280 by 1024: where the 65 frames per second (fps), World in Conflict scored (WIC) in 1280 through 1024 (82fps), and in 1920 WiC 1,200 (48 fps). Her score on Crysis at 1920 by 1200 was an unplayable 35 fps, but you could get scores close to playable at 1920 by 1200, if you tweak the quality settings. Compare this with the Dell s7100 1060NBK’s unplayable 3D scores on all four tests.

One area you might be interested in is entry-level hardcore 3D games. And so far there is no better bang for the buck than current EC for that category, the Gateway FX6831-01. For about $ 50 more, the Gateway gives you much faster / smoother game results at 1,280 by 1,024 resolution at both games, though the gap narrows to 1920 by 1200 resolution. It was also considerably easier to hard disks at the Gateway FX6831-01e upgrade. For these reasons, the FX6831-01 and overseeing the gaming crown.
On the multimedia desktop side, it’s a bit harder. The HP Pavilion Elite HPE-140f is cheaper, but the XPS 7100 has more hard drive space and faster competitor in the 3D tests. The XPS 7100 has much less bloatware. Sure, the HP HPE-140f has a better support for older technology (like the analog AV inputs and a TV tuner), but the XPS 7100 is better equipped with more examples of forward looking tech (1.5TB disk, HDMI, eSATA, DisplayPort, Blu-ray). The XPS 7100 is the new multimedia PC buyer, unless you have a lot of VHS videos to convert to digital formats or a system that old analog technology. Otherwise, the Dell XPS 7100 provides an attractive multimedia PC.
