Samsung R540-11 Review
Asking follow on the heels of his Samsung R480 is a major task. After all, the R480 was an Editors’ Choice, one of our best laptops in our class desktop replacement, and offered three characteristics that would make anyone’s mouth water: a fast Core i5 processor, high-performance gaming graphics and Blu-ray drive. But Samsung does not back down from challenge. The Samsung R540-11 ($ 999 street) desktop replacement laptop is packaged as a performance as its predecessor, providing more graphics power this time, albeit at the expense of battery life. It is a legitimate runner up to the R480.
Design
Although replaced shiny plastic laptop trolleys are distinguished by their lovers slowly metallic counterparts is, Samsung has a way to enliven the material they found. The R540-11 is because of glossy and thick hard plastic, but like the R480, the plastic is treated to something else, in this case are similar to wood. The brown color and turns dark grains are unlike any decorative patterns done before, and there is a laminate overlay. It masks fingerprints and smudges better than the glossy black lid found in the Lenovo IdeaPad Z560. Textured plastic, such as on the chassis of the Asus N82Jv-X1 is found to be more effective and thinner than the R540-11. But there is something about metal to say. Metals are smooth, cool to the touch, and more desirable from an aesthetic point of view. The R540-11 (5.2 lbs) is now the lightest 15-inch laptop, only edges of the Samsung R480 (5.4 lbs).

A 15.6-inch widescreen has as much space as their rivals. Its price as any other in its class is limited to R540-11 to a 1366 x 768 resolution that is good enough for a 720p experience. Samsung does not seem to have a preference when it comes to the keyboard. The R480 uses the Chiclet keyboard, like ones found in the UL50VF-A1 Asus, Gateway and HP dv7-4083cl NV59C09u, the R540-11, on the other hand, returns to a traditional design, although both versions are attractive and comfortable on the type. The dedicated mouse buttons are a bit noisy, but they are not tuned too resistant.
Features
Blu-ray drive (BD-ROM) are not standard DVD burner replaced in the foreseeable future, but they are their way into more and more laptops. The R540-11, like the Samsung R480, HP dv7-4083cl Gateway and NV59C09u, you have to play the latest Blu-ray movie titles. Omits an eSATA port, the type of technology usually associated with a USB port and can improve memory with a USB transfer rates. But do not worry, the supplied 500GB, 5,400 rpm hard drive is spacious enough to satisfy many videophiles. The dv7-4083cl also ships with a 500 GB hard drive, but rotates faster 7,200 RPM, for better performance. An ExpressCard slot is no longer available, but it is an SD slot, Ethernet, HDMI and VGA.

Performance
A Blu-ray drive is only part of the R540-11 roll call. The other is the speed because it has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5-450M processor, similar to the HP dv7-4083cl, Asus and HP dv6 N82Jv-X1-3033cl. It is a powerful processor core as found in the i3 NV59C09u Gateway and Lenovo Z560, as illustrated by our performance tests. In video encoding tests, which ended the processor stress, it in 46 seconds, which is as fast as its core i5 counterparts. Cinebench R10 (6190) and PCMark Vantage (8269) takes place all the way up. On our Photoshop CS4 tests, the R540-11 and HP dv7-4083cl amassed the best record in 25 seconds.
Improved graphics performance, as the R480. The R540-11 direction changes and went with an ATI Mobility Radeon 545v instead of an Nvidia chipset. You will not find a switchable graphics mechanism, though, with an integrated Intel chip for power savings, the HP dv7-4083cl, Asus UL50VF-A1 and Asus N82Jv-X1 have this technology (integrated graphics can be used on the motherboard of R540-11) Not used. The ATI chip just does what it supposed to do-pump frame rates. 3DMark06 score (4784) showed that the ATI chip was comparable to that found in the HP dv7-4083cl (ATI Mobility Radeon 5470). World in Conflict (24 frames per second) and Crysis (26.2 fps) results were significantly better than the Samsung R480, so it’s a perfectly viable gaming laptop.
At the top of the speed of its drawbacks, of which the life of the battery has to be beaten. The R540-11′s 44WH (6-cell) battery is actually smaller than that of R480 (48Wh) and resulted in a miserable battery life. The Samsung R540-11 is a worthy successor to the R480. The Blu-ray drive will be conducted from the R480, you get more graphics power and a higher-clocked Core i5 processor. My only upset that battery life is not what you expect from the lightest 15-inch laptop in the industry. For this reason alone I would go Costco and look at the HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl-our Editors’ Choice in the desktop-replacement laptop category.
