It’s a hard world for a desktop PC. Laptops are stolen all glamor, you need to offer something special if you need to stand out among the rank and file of the stationary computing. Acer Aspire X3400-U2012 is not a true portable PC, but paired with a Small Form Factor (SFF) chassis with desktop components does the grunt work-for-the-footprint balance make it a reasonable buy.

There is a little bit of Lenovo in the Aspire X3400 design to illuminate a black Mini-Tower (standing 10.5 cm high) with a small splash of blue, the only test that matters. Forward there is a DVD burner, five USB 2.0 ports, a multiformat card reader and audio in/out, on the back there are four more USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and VGA, gigabit Ethernet, audio in/out (with 5.1 channel support), an eSATA port, PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse conventional (Acer supplied peripherals are both USB, and of adequate quality, if not all out yet) and of course power. Build quality is decent, with a pleasant mix of gloss and matt black plastic.

Inside there is a 2.9 GHz AMD Athlon X3 435 processor with 4 GB of DDR3 memory and NVIDIA GeForce 9200 integrated graphics with a 500GB hard drive combined, although no integrated Bluetooth and WiFi. Acer offers a 2.9 GHz processor and 635 X4 up to 1 TB storage capacity as options, while the Aspire X3400 can handle up to 8GB of DDR3 memory. Of course, because of the small size, there is no free drive bays inside: the optical drive takes the 5.25-inch bay and the hard drive occupies the 3.5-inch bay.

Software is Windows 7 Home Edition, complete with a set of basic own applications Acer. Probably the most interesting of the HTPC fans probably eyeing the Aspire X3400 is the eRecovery management application that automatically backs up your multimedia store. There are also the usual trial version of Office Home & Student 2007 (together with a full copy of Works 8.5), a trial version of McAfee, the Google Toolbar and Nero 9 Essentials.

We benchmark tested Acer Aspire X3400-U2012 with Geekbench, a synthetic test of processor and memory performance. It has an adequate 5108, mainly thanks to a strong showing by the processor. By comparison, Gateway ZX6900 – which uses a 2.93 GHz Intel Core i3-530 with 4GB of RAM – is slightly higher in 5313. Acer’s all-in-one, the Aspire Z5600, scored 5475 with 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 and 4 GB of RAM.

The Aspire X3400 integrated GeForce 9200 graphics are definitely showing their age, and this is not the GPU for you if you hope to do some serious gaming. While it can run titles like Crysis it to its very minimum settings, and you will still see dropped frames. Instead, think of the Aspire X3400 as a home multimedia PC, perfect size to slot below your TV, hook up via HDMI (with HDCP support) and as a media player. These conditions are far more his skills sufficiently to be Windows 7 Professional provides native media PC features, although you need a USB TV tuner if you want to record/pause broadcast television add. It is a shame Acer not throw a remote control in the field (or at least wireless keyboard/mouse).

In operation, the Acer is fairly quiet – there are some that may be noticeable fan noise during quiet media playback, but nothing extreme – and shows little in the way lay. We searched several Internet-Tabs happy with the media plays in the background, the Aspire X3400 had kept no problem with us. work, coupled with significant NAS, it certainly would, and a HTPC.
We want to see a bigger hard drive as standard, and of course the GPU missed anything semi-serious players could be looking for, but considering the $ 499.99 MRSP there is much about the Acer Aspire X3400-U2012 like. Solid – though not outstanding – performance along with an admirably small space and plenty of connectivity options add up to a strong contender for your living room or home office.
