Lenovo Thinkpad X100E Review

Is the Lenovo ThinkPad X100e a netbook or ultra-portable? The answer seems to be: a bit of both. It’s faster than most netbooks, with a larger, higher-resolution screen, a spacious keyboard, and a larger hard drive than you find in the rule in Lilliputian laptops. You pay for these extras, though. It’s a little heavier than run-of-the-mill Netbooks and has limited battery life. The price is almost ultra-portable and field: The machines start at $ 499, and the configuration we reviewed cost $ 695. That’s a lot for a netbook.

Here’s the first thing you will pass on this ThinkPad strike, but – it’s red! (If you find that shocking color, you can also order standard ThinkPad black.) If you associate with fast red sports car, the X100e will not disappoint. With its Athlon 40 processor Neo-MV and 2 GB of RAM, achieved this ThinkPad A52 on WorldBench 6, a screaming speed for netbooks. I did not notice, pull when opening and switching between applications, surf the handling of Windows controls, or the Web.

Do not expect powerful video performance, though. The X100e shot HD, full screen video into something more like a slide show. And even at 480p, the video stuttered and jumped. Lenovo is marketing the X100e mostly corporate types and have to think that they should work instead of watching YouTube.

And this laptop is useful, to do work. The 11.6-inch display has a native resolution of 1366 x 768, significantly more than the typical 10.1-inch 1024-by-600 resolution screen netbook. And the display is relatively easy to read, even from an angle. But I found the colors on the screen a little washed out.

The keyboard is full size, with large keys, shift and tab. The keys must be the kind of solid feedback on touch typists. Lenovo offers two options for pointing devices – and this is probably one too much. ThinkPad traditionalists, the company’s signature eraserhead pointer, which his own mouse and scroll buttons. The system works well for those who are satisfied with it. But Lenovo trapped in a touchpad for all people who are not accustomed to the eraserhead. And it’s just not enough room for the touchpad – the surface is small and the buttons are tiny. They are about a quarter-inch deep and right on the edge of the laptop. If you miss the keys (not hard to do), your thumb slips off the laptop entirely. The trackpad works feature multi-touch, but the answer is inconsistent – sometimes two-finger scrolling works well, the trackpad sometimes do not notice it at all.

The X100e is equipped, and you can add more functions. Our test unit had a 320GB hard drive (you can also save some money with a 250 GB hard drive). The laptop comes with Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n wireless. A built-in 3G wireless broadband card for an additional fee. In addition, the features pretty standard – two USB ports on the left side on the right side, and a multi-card reader on the right and a VGA port in the back.

For a small machine X100e sound is impressive. Lenovo has the speakers located at the bottom of the palm rest, which inclines from the surface of the table resting on the laptop’s. The design seems more to escape the sound, so that the laptop decent volume. And for small speakers, the sound was relatively clean and precise, though understandably light on bass.

At 3.3 pounds (3.9 pounds with power adapter), the X100e is a little heavier than other netbooks, but I hardly noticed the extra weight. With the standard battery lasted the X100e for only 5 hours and 28 minutes. This is anemic for netbooks, but not unexpected given more powerful processor is the X100e.

Our test unit came with Windows 7 Professional, a nice upgrade from the Windows 7 Home Edition on many netbooks. Not looking for much more in the Applications folder, though. Adobe Reader is the only piece of software from third parties. Lenovo has also loaded his own utilities, including a password manager and power management application. I think Lenovo utilities useful than the bloatware that comes on many machines, but that does not make them exciting.

At 600 dollars we tested X100e not be the kind of throw-away computer, many netbooks. For the price you get sprightly performance, a larger display and a comfortable keyboard. But look around if you are looking for great video performance or all-day battery life, otherwise.
