HP Pavilion dv6-3010us Review
The HP Pavilion dv6-3010us, sold at Amazon offers some remarkable new features. For a start it is one of the first pavilion we reviewed to have new HP design feature. It is also one of the first notebooks to continue through the labs with the latest AMD platform vision. Both the new design and new AMD vision platform are mixed bags. We welcome HP away from the high-gloss chassis pavilion is used in the past few years, but both the keyboard and touch pad design will take some getting used to.
AMD’s new platform also offers fair performance and battery life, but it still can not compete with similarly priced Intel Core i3 and Core i5 systems. The HP Pavilion dv6-3010us is certainly an attractive looking laptop, but you can find a better price and performance elsewhere.
I’m not a big fan of the HP Pavilion design in the past. For me, the high-gloss surfaces and chrome frame is more attention from big box shelves were put on, actually improve as the benefits to the buyer of the machines designed. The shiny surfaces attracted fingerprints within the first few seconds of the box and the glossy touch pad, which did not provide the best feel, creating drag against your mouse finger. The new pavilion design at the dv6-3010us has a surface that can best be described at a semi-gloss, and the touchpad fortunately has a matte surface. The laptop remains blissfully free of fingerprints, releasing a soft, silky shine.
The color of the Pavilion dv6-3010us is a light golden color that HP calls champagne. How long-running HP Imprint finish in the past Pavilions dv6-3010us a subtle geometric pattern. The laptop lid and keyboard deck feature of this champagne satin finish and the glossy black screen bezel and matte black keyboard and touchpad provide a nice contrast.

The Pavilion dv6-3010us has a simple, simple look. You will not find any media shortcut keys above the keyboard, yet you will find a separate numeric keypad on the right. Instead, you get a full keyboard centered below the display. It has isolated keys that look good and are comfortable to use. The buttons feel sturdy and provide the right amount of travel, but I’m not thrilled with HP decision, a column of shortcut keys on the left side of the keyboard to add. The keys provide one-button access to Windows Live Mail, Cyberlink PowerDVD 9, your default browser, a print window, and a calculator. It takes a little getting used to, before you’re not hitting the print button instead of the Shift key on the calculator instead of the Alt key or caps lock instead of the “a” key.
The touchpad is completely redesigned and is very similar to the touchpad on the Apple MacBook Pro. The mouse buttons are not separate but are a key part of the touchpad, thin white lines on the touch pad on the mouse button demark the area painted. The entire touchpad presses along its lower edge. The uniform design sounds good in theory, but it is less useful in practice.
The support from Multi-Touch gestures like two finger scrolling, rotating and zooming are in their own right, but this functionality impaired simple mouse movements and commands.
For example, left my right thumb rests on the mouse click area often causes sudden, unpredictable movements of the cursor. Click Similarly when trying on a link or icon, my thumb moved to the left mouse button area sometimes set up a small painting, before I could actually press down the key, and the cursor a few pixels on your screen moves in and out Click the link or icon I wanted. I could click to dial touch sensitivity of the touchpad, and I could touch protection feature called PalmCheck Guard under the Mouse Properties window. Setting these two touchpad sensitivity slider helped somewhat, but in the course of this review, I felt like I was fighting against the touchpad.

I like the unique method used to disable the touchpad, you should turn it off in favor of a mouse. A small LED is located in the upper left corner of the touchpad. Double-tap the corner, and the LED is orange, cautions that the touchpad is disabled. Double tap again and the LED goes off and the touch pad is back in action. The laptop has two LEDs that act as useful indicators found on the F11 and F12. The F11 is assigned as the mute button when the mute function is activated, the LED lights orange. White is also on the F12 key when on Wi-Fi, and the LED lights when turned off, the LED will become orange.
The dv6-3010us weighs a trim 5.3 pounds, with which it slightly on the bright side of the scale for a 15.6-inch laptop. It’s the same weight as the MSI P600-019US and a few grams lighter than the 5.5-pound HP Pavilion G62-144DX.
The dv6-3010us has a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 resolution, a benchmark for the size and capable of displaying 720p HD video. Still images showed rich colors and crisp video viewing and smooth. The screen is glossy coating helps colors pop and smooth edges, but it still manages to glare and reflections to a minimum. A low-grade, 0.3-megapixel Webcam sits above the display.
The laptop has two forward-looking Altec Lansing stereo speakers. You will not rattle on the walls, but they offer rich sound, compared to other integrated laptop speakers, as on the MSI P600-019US or HP Pavilion G62-144DX.

With three USB 2.0 ports, a combo eSATA/USB 2.0 port, VGA and HDMI video ports, a multiformat card reader and headphone and microphone jacks, which provides dv6-3010us useful extension connections. The only thing missing, that some users are looking for an ExpressCard slot. Similarly, wireless connectivity is superb, with 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth onboard. Wired connectivity, Ethernet and Gigabit first class.
The laptop hard drive is only average. Some models at or near this price offer a 500 GB hard drive, such as the Alienware m17x, but most offer a 320 GB hard drive, as is the case here. You have to spend a bit more to step up to a Blu-ray drive. The Samsung R480 has such a drive, but a dual-layer DVD burner is the optical drive of choice on the Pavilion dv6-3010us.
