LED backlighting is becoming more and more traction in the display market, ViewSonic and has provided us with another candidate, the VX2250wm 21.5in. This affordable TN-based dual-monitor provides inputs, a slim profile and integrated speakers and a (now standard at this size) Full HD/1080p resolution, not to mention a ridiculous 10,000,000:1 claimed dynamic contrast ratio. Let’s see how it holds.
As usual with budget monitor, the VX2250wm comes in two parts which are easy to assemble: simply the base on a desk and click on the monitor and they are certainly a thumb-screw and you’re done. As you might have guessed it to tilt adjustability is limited, but again, that the par for the course.

The monitor sports VGA, DVI and 3.5mm audio ports (the latter feeding its integrated speakers) that are pointing down, so they are not the easiest access, but at least ViewSonic offers cable for all of them. Some may criticize the lack of HDMI, but you can hook up HDMI to DVI cable with a cheap and simple adapter, and adding the additional digital input would have hiked the price up to monitor.
There is no power brick either VX2250wm’s concern transformer is integrated into the chassis, that is, it takes a standard kettle lead. The production quality is decent enough, although it is not the best we have all, with the occasional bit of crack come here and there. At a mere 3.5kg, it is quite easy but.

When it comes to the design VX2250wm is very attractive. Despite its high potential for the maintenance, which we really like the black glossy finish, especially when combined with its slim bezel and subtly tapered corners. This is all done in a transparent strip at the base, which works well but is somewhat cumbersome ruined by the power balance statements. A transparent blue-backlit affair with a sharp chrome trim, we can not quite put our finger on why it does not work, but the somewhat clunky are certainly not help.
Apart from his physical power switch on the VX2250wm Checks are all touch-based and marked quite plainly on the front of the bezel, though at least this makes them easy to see. Thankfully, the four-Touch controls well-spaced, logically and register very responsive, although with the slightest touch immediately. The first ‘key’ calls the OSD menus and exits, while the second selection and double as an input switcher. The ups and downs “Key”, call each of the volume and brightness/contrast menu.

ViewSonic OSD is a bit dull to use at least reasonably easy and intuitive, although it could have really done with a splash of color to their three-tone to relieve blue, white and black livery. All basic settings are available, including one off the sRGB mode, different color temperatures, the option to activate a dynamic contrast-or and an ECO mode.
However, it is not as extensive as a selection found on some competitors, with the caveat that his most important missing picture mode presets. For some users this could be a blessing in disguise, as such modes will tend to be poorly configured by default, but if they can correctly configured very useful.

Its LED-backlit display helps the VX2250wm to be very frugal. After calibration, an average of 15W it in normal usage and with Dynamic Contrast turned exhausted at 19.1W. Activate its Eco-Mode, meanwhile led to an impressive maximum power of 13W.
We rarely get good performance from built-in monitor speakers, but the stereo speakers 2W put in an impressive show this ViewSonic surprising. This is not to say they can even match a budget pair standalones or the integrated efforts of an all-in-one as the MSI Wind Top AE2220 Hi-Fi, but for a representation of this thin and light they produce some halfway decent bass and a high volume. This means the action in movies comes with sufficient Oomph, although means a slight muddiness in the whole range that you are still better with external speakers or headphones.

Of course, the most important part of any monitor is the image quality, so let us see how the ViewSonic VX2250wm is. It is based on TN panel technology, sports a fairly average response time of 5 ms, a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution and – thanks to its LED backlight – a claimed dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1, with a realistic depiction of native 1,000:1. Granted, on the other hand is perceived by a dynamic contrast system that actually works well enough that we recommend it supports for entertainment material, but it is still a continent away from the dynamic ridiculous figure.
Strangely, the most important image VX2250wm strengths are also its primary weakness. To clarify this, with examples, it provides more detail await dark than we are normally based from a TN display, occasionally reveals subtleties that some competitors are not in movies and games (which are generally rather dark tones emphasize). However, it does so at the expense of whites always grayer than we’re used to.

Another example is points of view, the very great and horizontally from the top. The latter is particularly surprising for a TN panel, which usually suffers under sharp contrast and color shift when the top of a narrow optimal viewing angle. Conversely, the VX2250wm’s performance in this context, if one even from a little below indeed very bad. To the best of him out of your line of sight must be positioned higher than really ideal, but if you pile of magazines under your monitor, that’s probably the case anyway.
Ultimately, in both examples, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Combine this with decent sharpness, no sign of backlight bleed and minimal banding noticeable only in different shades of green, and you have a pretty good performer. The only other factor is shimmering pixel by poorly regulated voltages, but also unusual, while on a budget display, this is not a problem most people encounter frequently.

Overall, then, how does the ViewSonic VX2250wm hold up to the competition? When a price of 160-odd, it is in the same price class as the BenQ V2410T, which not only a 24-inch screen real estate, but also a robust matt, and full adjustment, including height, tilt, swivel and pivot. Granted the picture quality is bad, but either screen is good for daily use and productivity to be done.
Only when games and movies will be thrown into the mix not the VX2250wm offers a real advantage, but if you can afford another 40 you can use the Samsung SyncMaster F2380 (the bigger, get Full HD cousin of the award-winning F2080), which plays them in every way except fuel economy. However, if your budget is limited and the integrated speakers are something you might after this only the monitor for you to be.

Verdict
Despite its weaknesses, the VX2250wm offers a few selected image quality that few match highlights household with LED-backlit monitors and speakers, which tend to decent. However, ViewSonic has some its latest 21.5-inch model priced a little high compared to the presented better (if less speaker-win) competition to make it to our hearts.
