Toshiba Mini 300 Series NB305-N310 Review
This is Toshiba mini NB305-N310 of the slightly lower-end version of the Toshiba Netbook Mini NB305-N410, but design and the differences NB305-N310 capability, Windows XP, to get started with this Mini is a better choice than the NB305-N410.
Our review model has a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N450 processor with GMA3150 integrated graphics processor, a 160GB hard drive and 1GB RAM. It also has a built-in webcam and microphone combination, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (but no Bluetooth) and delivered a one-year warranty.

The netbook has the same weight and dimensions as the NB305-N410: 2.9 pounds (including battery), and 10.5 cm wide, 7.6 inches high by 1.4 inches thick. It comes with a six-cell lithium-ion battery, which manages about 9.5 hours of battery life in PCWorld tests. The battery that sits under the chassis is pretty decent – when it comes to the back of the netbook a bit thicker than the front goes.
The NB305-N410 comes in blue, brown or white, the NB305-N310 only comes in one color: Black Onyx. The lid and the trackpad are glossy and matte-structured, while the inner surfaces are smooth, slightly sparkly black, and overall make the color of choice NB305-N310 look more professional and more expensive. The netbook is equipped with three USB 2.0 ports (including a “sleep and charge” port you use to USB devices can even charge while the computer is in sleep mode), an Ethernet port, an SD Card slot, a VGA-out and microphone and headphone jacks.

In contrast to the high-end version of the keyboard, with its small, oddly shaped chiclet-style keys, the NB305-N310 keyboard has a pleasant, normal keyboard. His flat, black keys all over full-size, are the space bar is to some extent, the shift keys decently large, and the tab key – albeit small – is simply wrong to hit (on the NB305-N410 keyboard, I the Tab key every time I tried to use it. The function keys at the top are tiny, but the extra attention makes to the letter of keys more than compensate.
The NB305-N310′s trackpad is bigger than on most Netbooks, and comes with two large, easy-to-press mouse buttons. The trackpad is softer and therefore easier than the high-end model and trackpad supports multitouch gestures like pinching to zoom and two finger scrolling.

The new Mini has a 10.1-inch glossy widescreen LED-backlit display with a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. If you can get past the low resolution, this is actually a big screen – the colors are bright and sharp, the images are sharp and easy to see even in bright sunlight. If you move too far left or right, it’s a bit of reflection – especially on pages with dark background.
Although this netbook offers stereo sound, the speakers are underneath the chassis, which makes it a bit hard to hear, especially if the device is on your lap. Video playback is pretty good if you are viewed in standard definition and not in full screen mode, but the Atom N450 processor, not the power, High Definition, to deliver full-screen video. A standard-definition episode of House on Hulu flew in without any problems, but when I switched to full screen or high def, I immediately encountered significant stuttering. If you opt for a netbook that play full-screen Flash video can look, this is not the model for you.

The NB305-N310 comes with Windows XP, Skype, and Microsoft Works 9.0 preinstalled, along with demo versions of Microsoft Office 2007 and Norton Internet Security 2010. Windows XP is a better deal than 7 Windows Starter Edition (on the high-end version included), because Windows does not allow 7 Starter Edition, personalization – such as changing the desktop background – or the support of Windows Media Center. Upgrading from Windows 7 Starter Edition to a higher level version of the OS will cost an extra $ 80, while you get the full version of Windows XP preinstalled on the NB305-N310. Toshiba includes some of its own apps as Toshiba Bulletin Board (which you can “glue” things on the desktop – like Apple’s widget screen) and Toshiba PC Health Monitor (which keeps track of your PC’s Health).
The Toshiba NB305 mini-N310 costs $ 50 less than the high-end mini-NB305 N410 and is actually a better deal. Sure, the hard drive less (160 vs. 250 GB), but that was it. The full version of Windows XP Starter proposed version of Windows 7, the keyboard is much easier to type on, and the design is leaner and more professional looking.
