Intel Core i7 Processor i7-930 Review
When the first Core i7 Bloomfield chips first emerged, it was the usual, expensive parts appalling that hit the ground running. We were horrified at the sight of running eight threads on a single-CPU machine and the hole it would leave in the bag.
Then came the Incredi-chip, the Core i7 920. At 200 it was the cheapest Core i7 around, but packed a hell of a wallop in his modest silicon innards, thanks to its impressive performance overclock. The next amplification of the chip, the 920 D0, served only to further improve their prospects.

But now there’s the Core i7 930, wherein a chip is calculated with the best price i7 X58 CPU around. So what will be different with this new pretender?
Now the first thing is the stock speed: 2.8 GHz, it is slightly higher than their older brothers, clocked outstanding performance straight from the box. The real key to this new chip is the higher CPU multiplier, that is 930 under the hood Sporting. It is only slightly larger than the 920′s 21x at 22x, but that should make all the difference especially when fine-tuning of the clocks.

And that is exactly what this CPU, as the i7 920 before it, is for. This is a cheap (ER) chip for overclockers, that the type of performance you want from more expensive CPUs. With the upped dimension, and the stability that is a well established design and manufacturing process, this chip is all set to the incredible performance, the overclocking reached the top 920.
To this end, we have plumbed the 930 in our test stand with the new Rampage Extreme III (R3E) overclocker board from Asus. In stock speeds rolls much as you would expect from a slightly faster version of the 920th It is a few seconds faster in Cinebench rendering test and only test a little faster in World in Conflict (WiC) and the X264 encoding.

So, to overclock it. And here, usually it is a little more complicated. The board is already R3E best buds with the unlocked 920, and as such all of its chip-chomping options in the BIOS, including the CPU Level Up – and the Auto settings that stress brings. For this reason, we were able to beat a solid 4.1GHz on air cooling, without the chip in simmering liquid slag.
Unfortunately, the 930 is not as well recognized on the Asus board, which means that we do the overclocking the hard way: had meant by ourselves. Still, it only shows what a chip of this overclockable due to the fact that no voltage tweaks in our name, and still on air cooling alone, we managed to produce a stable 4.23GHz i7 930 will be made with our clock speed.

Only WiC but did this translate into serious performance gains over the 920, with only a second faster in Cinebench encode and hitting parity in the x264. But well worth the extra 40 pounds – you are on the 930 odd on the dropping i7 920?
In the real world terms that you hardly notice the performance difference between them, but the extreme tweakers out there will be in a position superior numbers, with some clever management post tension. For the rest of us mortals, but the 920 is still the cheap X58 chip of choice.
