Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17 Review
In a sea of almost interchangeable 10.1-inch netbook, the Asus EeePC 1001P-MU17 is characterized by one thing: Express Gate, an almost instant-on alternative operating system that is quick access to the Web, online gaming, Skype, instant messaging and allows your photos. If you remember the first Linux-based Netbooks, you have the idea. To boot Express Gate on, start the 1001-MU17 using a secondary power button (which is no light) on the upper left-hand side of the keyboard deck. Boot Windows 7 starter is achieved through the normal illuminated power button on the upper right.

After Express Gate, the 1001-MU17 declines mainly to the secular. You get the current popular netbook components: an Intel Atom N450 processor with an integrated GPU 3150, 1 GB DDR2 RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The ports are also the typical lineup for a 10.1-inch device: three USB, one VGA, one AC, a 10/100 Ethernet jack, a single SD slot, and audio in/out and a Kensington Lock port.
The EeePC 1001-MU17 is in an all-black color scheme designed to break only a silver rocker switch on the trackpad and a checkerboard pattern on the topside and below deck. It looks as if it would be better at home than in a meeting in a caf This is not a complaint, just a word of warning to those who want to style-conscious friends could be with their new purchase wow.

The netbook weighs 2.79 pounds, about average for this category of netbook with a six-cell battery. If weight is more of a concern than at runtime, you can drop that to 2.24 pounds with a three-cell battery. A warning look: When you order, the performance with a SSD upgrade, you might want to skip the 1001-MU17. Unlike most netbooks, it has no cover for the hard disk. On the other hand, it has a cover for the memory card if you want to update the SODIMM.
Overall, the 1001-MU17 feel as snappy as the N450-based netbook running Windows 7 can – you can live with it, but that’s all. The WorldBench 6 performance levels of 34, while a point higher than most, that bears out. Video performance was a bit worse than average. The webcam image was decently smooth, and the unit had no problem with QuickTime or Flash-HD video locally. However, MP4 and WMV was a stuttering mess, such as Flash videos online. Online Flash Games was abrupt to the point of distraction. Battery life was a solid 6 hours and 50 minutes – not the best we have seen, but more than enough to get you from coast to coast.

The keyboard on the LT2120u has a sharp feel and the vast left/right arrow keys, some of the hunt to eliminate some users experience otherwise. The touchpad was also exceptionally well suited for development. If you hate random tap-clicks, give this unit an attempt to see if it does not eliminate these problems.
Asus bundles Microsoft Works with the 1001-MU17, which should cover most user’s needs well enough, although a 60-day trial version of Office 2007 also included for users looking for a little more pep, and you will Skype detect installed, as well. Asus has admirably restrained placement useless software on the desktop. You do not see the eBay shortcuts or outdated Google Desktop that vendors such as Gateway stack.

The Asus EeePC 1001-MU17 is a solid effort of the company that started the netbook craze. It has a very nice keyboard and touch pad set exceptionally well – often overlooked factors in the netbook purchase equation. While not flashy, it’s still pretty quiet, and if you regularly need quick access to the Web, the Express Gate can be practical, yes.
