Toshiba Satellite U505-S2010 Review

Toshiba Satellite U505′s was never very slim ultra portable system. The focus of the system has more power and features than the portability. This continues with the latest revision of the 13-inch upgrades, that the display and the processor.

The processor for the Satellite U505 has been updated to the new Intel Core i5-420M to use dual-core processor. This enables a significant performance increase that the system can be used as the primary computer system for sophisticated tasks such as video work that the new Ultra-Low-Voltage-laptops are lacking. The 4 GB of DDR3 memory, it can also smooth multitasking. The disadvantage is that this move has more power.

The other important feature added to the Satellite U505 is a new 13.3-inch LCD display, the multi-touch support. This may not be a major attraction for some users but the laptop with a lot of applications around the new Windows 7 touch functions and many laptops now ship with multi-touch trackpad for functions such as zoom, that work just as well. On the other side of the screen has a matte screen coating prevents fingerprints, but also reduces glare as compared to the typical glossy coating of most laptops.

Graphics are still of an integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD processor that restricted some functionality is supplied. It lacks any sufficient performance even for casual gaming PC. It does provide for a smooth experience HD video streaming from the Internet, however.

One of the nice aspects of the Satellite U505 is the inclusion of an internal DVD burner. Thus, the system can easily download software or used for playback or recording CDs and DVDs. It also includes a large 500GB hard drive, the more space for applications and data than traditional subnotebooks in the rule that 320 GB of storage provides. The drive has been tested a little slower than other laptops, which rotate min with 5400 U rates.

Battery life is one of the big draws for consumers considered ultra portables now. This is probably one of the biggest problems with the Satellite U505 notebook. In my test DVD playback, the system was only able to run a little more than two hours before it went into standby mode. This is significantly below the average for ultra portable one and far behind the new Ultra Low Voltage-class laptops.

The Satellite U505 is bulkier than the average ultraportable at about one and a half inches thick. This extra mass does have the added advantage of the additional space for peripheral ports. Unlike most 13-inch laptops, it includes a full size ExpressCard 54 slot for adding expansion cards for wireless networks and other features.
