Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 Review

Lenovo sells everything, including the third generation, 10.1-inch Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 Netbook appears to the board or meeting room – will be determined in this case, perhaps presented in the meeting room in Terry Gilliam Film Brazil (top or lid of the device has a slightly psychedelic red checkerboard pattern) – but a meeting yet.

The 2.76-pound business-oriented S10-3 per spec netbook a bit more expensive than the competition. Most of the other 10.1-inch, 1024 x 600 resolution netbooks for $ 10 to $ 50 less for sale with the same 1GB Intel N450 3150 CPU GPU combination, and a more spacious 250-GB hard drive, compared with the S10-3 150GB model. While 150GB is more than enough for most users, this means that you are getting a bit less on the fundamentals and pay a bit extra for the business functions and software.

Or is it the ergonomics for which you are paying? Who is responsible for Lenovo Input deserves a raise and or high praise. The combination of innovative multi-touch touch pad rocker button on the S10-3 is a relief for everyone (including this writer) who hates accidentally while dragging or tapping on the hunt for buttons. Just a little pressure on the bottom apply to the left or right corners of the device, and you have your click.

Another time honored Lenovo strength is the keyboard, and the IdeaPad S10-3 does not disappoint in this area either. The typing feel is so good, like you find on a Netbook, and there is no scrunched or misplaced keys la Asus and Fujitsu. This netbook feels less like a Netbook than any other 10.1-inch model that I have ever tried.

Lenovo also bundles some interesting software with the IdeaPad S10-3. Most of it, such as face recognition VeriFace security is based entirely on business users. Lock the system with a password and you will VeriFace register by scanning your cup with the webcam. It works quite well, and you see your eyes sparkle while creating on-screen VeriFace your profile … I do not care who you are, what fun it right. But alas, logging in this way gets tiring after a while and is much slower than simply typing in your password.

Other items are Direct Share, which files and folders are synchronized across the network, and OneKey Recovery, the images of your hard drive for disaster recovery – relatively boring, but useful utilities, although the latter program duplicate Windows functionality. Unfortunately, you do not even have Microsoft Works, with basic office work carried out. Lenovo probably feel the intended audience is policy to its own productivity suite, or activate the included 60-day trial version of Office 2007.

The rest of the S10-3 specs are netbook standard. You get three USB ports: one on the left side to the VGA port and SD slot and two on the right with the Ethernet and audio input and output. The AC connection is on the left side, along with a wireless switch. The hard drive, memory and free miniPCI-Express slot can be easily accessible with a single removable panel on the underside of the machine. Not only that, but the screws are in captivity – so if you try to roll out a fleet of these puppies and want to update it, you do not need to fly very small screws to worry about the pitch. Nice touch.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 ran for 8 hours, 27 minutes in our battery tests, but his performance was boring to say the least. The score of 31 on WorldBench 6 is subpar for a Netbook, and the general feel of the Windows 7 operating system is rather slow starter. Part of the problem is that Lenovo has a habit of piling on background processes with software that not much more than double existing Windows features. The ReadyComm 5 Networking Utility is an example. A few minutes with msconfig.exe and uninstalling unnecessary apps perked the machine a lot.

Unfortunately, this tune did not help that much video performance: 720 HD-Video, one of my standard hands-on tests, played smoothly only when the very efficient Quicktime MP4 codec transcoding. Was a complete failure and WMV MP4 other implementations always stuttered or blocked. On the other side, audio from the speakers sounded better than on most netbooks.

Even if it is more expensive, slightly less well educated, and more slowly out of the box as much of its competition, the S10-3 more than the sum of its parts. Type and with a point before doing anything else, to save only $ 50 resort.
