ASUS UL80Vt-A1 Review

Asus has found his work for him in a market for the UL80Vt A1-cut. This laptop has a higher price ($ 849) specced than many similar competitors, although in the same league as her stablemate’s $ 800, the Asus UL30A. And how does Asus to justify the price tag?

The answer is surprisingly simple: long battery life (6 hours on our review unit) and better than average flexibility. The UL80Vt-A1 contains both a discrete graphics card nVidia G210M system and an integrated Intel alternative, so that users switch on the fly with the laptop’s performance and service life of the battery, adapted to the task at hand. Another attractive function of the power of the device is sipping LED display with backlight.

The UL80Vt-A1 comes with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium and installed 4 GB of DDR3 memory. The Intel processor in the heart of this laptop is a 1.3GHz CPU from the factory overclocked to 1.7 GHz. The UL80Vt-A1 earned WorldBench 6 score of 76 – pretty fast for its class, but hardly smoking fast. In any case, the user experience was generally positive.

The UL80Vt-A1 felt pretty snappy and responsive during everyday use to activate, even with Aero and Flip 3D Shake. The dedicated nVidia graphics kick by default at high performance settings. As a result, the laptop turned in frame rates above 35 frames per second on both Unreal Tournament 3 and Quake Wars: Enemy Territory at 800 x 600 resolution and high quality. Although the UL80Vt-A1 is not a gaming machine, you can throw it to games and sometimes surprisingly playable results.

When closed, the UL80Vt-A1 attractive brushed metal finish on the lid looks smooth, without seeming pretentious. With the lid is open, keep things streamlined, but the glossy surface around the display and the keyboard around made the experience input problems: My hands are permanently or slid across them. This is a pity because the keyboard itself is large, with a style layout of the inserted key chiclet on a flat screen.

The UL80Vt-A1′s 14-inch display delivered so-so color reproduction, tend to slightly faded look. The screen is bright and very readable in all lighting conditions, we tested it in, including direct sunlight. In fact, at the highest level, the display is sometimes almost too bright to. I would have preferred a higher resolution screen, but this may have presented problems with switchable discrete integrated graphics options. Despite the underwhelming resolution options I havd no problems with that day to day tasks such as working with Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.

Processing of these documents is a different matter. I have already mentioned the slippery surface around the keyboard. The mouse is terrible. Instead of dedicated right and left clicks, you get a single button, which swings left or right on one central point. This design is becoming more common these days (it can also be seen on the gateway NV5807u, for example) – and the trend must stop. You have to click to a considerable pressure on the button, get that makes the mouse even worse working conditions for use.

The UL80Vt-A1 comes with a fairly robust set of software options for the protection and restoration of data. The backup utility is also very intuitive and feature-rich. The electronic manual is also welcome.

The laptop speakers are standard fare for a machine that is not specifically dedicated to multimedia. The sound quality is not terrible – without significant distortion at moderate volume levels – but the lack of a dedicated subwoofer makes it unsuitable for serious UL80v hear.

The UL80Vt-A1 covers its base respectable. Strong battery life and surprisingly responsive performance newest Asus are giving to rig two fixed legs. The only major drawbacks are the prices and the wretched mouse.
