Choosing a Good Laptop for Freelance Web Designers
If you are a freelance web designer you’ll probably need a laptop some point in your business. An investment in laptop is the best option if you don’t have a computer yet. Today, majority of the laptops are powerful enough to run industry standard design software like Adobe Dreamweaver and Photoshop. So you won’t have to worry about the performance issue. There are many advantages of buying a laptop over desktop. One of such is the ability to do your work in places like Starbucks. If you are a freelance web designer you know there are times when you just need to go somewhere other your office to spark up those creative juice. And with a laptop you can work a park, a café or your own home. Being able to do this is so beneficial for web designers.
Now the question is how do you choose the right laptop for you? There are hundreds, if not thousands of difference laptops out there in the market, choosing the right one can require some knowledge. Well.. the very first thing is to decide how much you can afford to spend. Once you have this mind you can then filter out the ones that are outside your budget. You can then start look for the specs that suits your requirement the most. The screen would be a good place to start. How often do you think you will take the laptop outside of your house/office? If the answer is a lot you need to get something light and portable, 13 – 15 inch would be perfect in this case. Anything smaller you will find it hard to work with because design software have many panels and you need high resolution. The next component would the CPU. Since most of the laptops are now Duo-core you should be fine with any of them, just stick to Intel brand. Next would be the memory. Design software can use up a lot of memory, especially when you’re working on large Photoshop file that has hundreds of layers. The more the better, so try to get at least 4GB. This will give you enough room to open a few applications at once. Hard drive would be the third component you need to pay some attention to. This is like a storage room – the bigger it is the more files you can store. Most web designers have their own collections of images, fonts, vectors etc. These can take up a lot of space, so make sure you have at least 300GB. These three components are the most important ones for web designers. The rest are just bonuses and for personal use mostly, and you don’t have to focus too much on them.
